Just imagine.... Your playing Resident Evil, wandering about when all of a sudden you smell rotting flesh. Your stomach starts to fell real funny. You carry on walking, and the smell gets even stronger, and that toilet beckons even more. You carry on walking, hoping the smell will go away. You see this door, and think,'YES YES, give me fresh air'. You open the door and...."Aaaaah, it's full of zombies", and off to the bathroom you go. This might be disgusting but it would certainly make you feel as though you are really there.
OK then, let's say your playing Metal Gear Solid 2, and you can smell the rain, petrol fumes and cigarette smoke a treat from the opening sequence. You carry on playing the game, killing some guards, when you all of a sudden have to hide in a locker, and then it hits you; it smells to real, and you have to open your window because of the intense smell of Body Odour.
Every genre would be brought to life if you could smell the game. Dead bodies smell of rotten flesh, you can smell the mens body odour while playing footy games, and you can even smell the burning rubber while screaching aroung the corner in Burnout. It would certainly make games much more realistic, and may change how you play games all together, as the smells may influence your decisions. For example, if you smell the faint odour of rotting flesh that gets stronger, you know there maybe something nasty round the corner, and will be ready.
So, we have hearing, touch and sight, what about smell? Should certainly make games more interesting to play.
