Firstly we'll look at what I think is the more important question, "Is Rare going multi format?"
So what started all this then. Well for some reason a Christmas card sent to all it's mailing list was done towards Christmas. So what then? Well the wierd part is that there was an odd picture. It had a Christmas tree with five presents wrapped up underneath. It doesn't matter if they were wrapped as you could easily tell they were a Playstation 2, a Gamecube, a X Box, a Gameboy Advance and what looked like a mobile phone. Immediately people thought Rare were actually making games for other consoles. Why? Well Rare only make games for Nintendo and Nintendo only and to send a card with all present consoles on seems a little wierd. Why do this? Well no one knows.
We have known Rare to play tricks like this before on everyone and to see the Christmas card makes you think that they are staying put. But this doesn't really do it for me. After all after being constantly asked about their future by many you'd think they'd have something to say besides "No comment." This makes me think they maybe are moving. After all they like to keep games secret so why not their future.
But on the other hand Rare saying nothing may just be a way of getting free advertising. I mean everyone who loves Nintendo and Rare games must be talking about this. This is a great way of getting in the spotlight being as there has been no sign of life from their HQ in for years. But as there has been no games from Rare perhaps they are low on the money.Their last games were released at the dying stages of the Nintendo 64's life and there weren't really many people willing to pay another £50 or £40 to play a game on a dying console. Maybe Rare figure that if they go multi platform will earn them the money they deserve. With Microsoft, Activision and Sony you may think that Rare want a change.
So are Rare leaving Nintendo or not? Don't ask me. The only way to find out as always with Rare is to wait. It may seem annoying, and it is but they really have got the tension to mount and mount and mount until it will no more. Rare are great at doing this.
"Where's Rare?" Another question that I hear lots. But where are they now? Okay so we may have heard Starfox Adventures is being finished off, but three years of keeping quiet does make you think a little. Are they making changes to their company like moving to other consoles? Again with a question like this only time will tell. But in my opinion Rare are going through what I call a dry season. They are starting to get used to the Gamecube and it's power and with other consoles in mind are in deep thought.
But enough of what may happen and what will happen if Rare leave. Are Nintendo screwed? In my opinion with great games like Mario Sunshine, Legend Of Zelda and so many more I think Nintendo are fine whatever happens. Sure Rare will be missed with Banjo, Perfect Dark and Conker gone for good but third parties unlike with the Nintendo 64 are backing the purple box up. It may all seem very sudden but I think Nintendo may do without.
So Rare where are you! What's going on? Right now you can either hate Rare to the bone, not care or love their idea of the tension and keeping them talked about. You have to admire how doing nothing can get the talked about like crazy. Rare have been asked and asked what's going on and if they're moving and them keeping their mouths shut gets them all the free advertising they need.
In conclusion Rare are staying no matter what I think and that is all that really matters. And as for the answers, don't look at me. The what happens to Rare topic is far from over and all I can say is that is God damn exciting.
Thanks for reading.
If it's true, I expect that Rare could do to the Xbox what they did to the N64. Nintendo seem to be pretty self sufficient with the Gamecube and don't quite need them so much.
Rumour goes that MS offered 500 million dollars for the Twycross company.
Rare are worth EVERY penny of it.
I would certainly sell me an XBox...
