The premise is pretty simple: You must run a successful amusement park. RollerCoaster Tycoon offers a selection of 21 different scenarios, as well as a tutorial, for building your empire. In actuality, only five of the 21 scenarios are available at start-up - as you complete a portion of the initial scenarios more will become open to you. The scenarios typically involve either open or prebuilt amusement parks, challenging you to accomplish an objective, like achieving a certain attendance or profit goal.

I agree, though - it's extremely addictive. I've also got both add-on packs for it: Added Attractions and Loopy Landscapes.
Fantasy... like you, I usually prefer games with more action - but this is a wickedly addictive game. Trying to keep to the park development schedules on later levels really keeps you thinking the whole time. Well worth a try.
Unfortunately, Sims don't appeal to me because there's never enough 'action' i.e. shooting, casting spells, driving, punching, kicking, jumping etc., which is more my cup of vodka, but I might be interested if the tutorial sections had a little more depth.
