Just started reading this for English A2 this year. Absolutely incredible book. It's written from the perspective of a 14-year-old black girl who is raped by her father then married off to another man who does the same, and the narrative progresses through a series of letters to God.
While some people might be turned by some of the more graphic scenes, Colour Purple is a fantastic read - a real sense of pathos is developed toward Celie (narrator), and it really draws attention to the power struggles in male/female relationships. Really strong characters move the plot along at a fantastic pace, but also keep it slow enough for the reader to empathise totally with some of the other charcters - particularly Celie and her extroverted friend Sofia.
If you enjoyed anything by Maya Angelou, you should try this. I approached it with a degree of trepidation (after all, how often does the education system give you anything worthwhile to read?), but am now hooked.
Try it. You might just like it.
Deja Vous
Was it made into a film? Or am I just crazy?
