Time after time, games are going platinum and some people don't see the point. It's exactly the same situation when new consoles come out. Why do they release them at a hefty price and then after some unlucky, but desperate person has paid for it, reduce it to a more reasonable price? Wouldn't it have been much easier for everybody if they had released the console at a reasonable price? Well, yes, but unfortunately (if you didn't already know) there are some very clever people out there who are trying to make profit from consumers like us, so they have to test our patience first, but once they see that no one is buying because of their asking price, THEN they start thinking logically instead of greedily and reduce the price. A good example of this would be the release of Bill Gates'...excuse me ..Microsoft's Xbox or PC in the form of a box. Don't get me wrong, it's an attractive machine, but with its peripherals it does remind me a lot of a PC.

Okay so it isn't exactly the same issue about games going platinum, but it's the same principal. The difference however, is that once a console is released the company try and sell at a higher price where they can make a lot more profit, rather than a mediocre price where they could make less profit. Whereas games stick to a certain price, depending what console it's for and the quality of the game. Playstation2 games are on average £40 each (not with SR though), but higher anticipated games like MOH:Frontline are £44.99 (not with SR though). Then, once they've sold about a million copies they go Platinum, which often means a half price reduction. Lucky for those who waited, unlucky for the impatient ones that didn't.

I got DOA2 even before my pre-ordered PS2 had arrived, for £40. Being used to the Playstation price of about £30 I was a bit shocked by the asking price, but I was still willing to make the sacrifice. The PS2 itself was £300, and that was without a controller or memory card! I heard that Sony were going to drop the price just a few months after the November 24 release date, but I somehow couldn't find the patience to ...wait! My PS2 arrived late anyway, January 17th, and then three months later the damn thing was reduced to £199.99! This meant that if I had just waited that extra three months I could have bought myself an extra two games and a pad, or two control pads, a memory card and another game. But it was harder than it sounds to sit around and wait for the PS" to arrive. Just playing on my Playstation kept making me think *in an evil voice* "you could be playing DOA2 now!". I couldn't even wait to do that! I went over to my mates and played it, which actually didn't help the impatient situation at all.

Anyway, I got it and felt gutted about the price drop. Now, games and consoles come at a totally different price range, I know that, but it is still an issue when you buy a game, play it, get bored of it and wish you never bought it and then the damn thing goes platinum, which means you could've payed less money for a game that wasn't as good as you thought. Don't get me wrong, DOA2 is a cracking game, well it was for about three months, but then it just became another "plain" game. Nothing special. But remembering the price I payed for it, and seeing it sit miserably on the shelf, not being useful at all just made me wonder if it was worth it?! Then it goes platinum and then all the people ...pardon me..LUCKY people who had the patience to wait for the PS2 and DOA2 AND Tekken Tag Tournament AND GT3 AND GTA3 to drop their prices become the wiser and got those decent games and console at a very respectable price!

If only we hardcore gamers... well not exactly hardcore, but you know what I mean ...if only we had the patience to wait, but we don't! We're all used to our adrenaline or SOMETHING in our bodies telling us to get such and such game first, before others. After all, it does make you feel good. But is it worth it? Is an emotion worth spending more money than you have to? Well, when I put it that way it doesn't, but it is very hard to just sit around and wait for a game that everyone's ranting and raving about, to drop its price... VERY HARD! I can't do it! In fact, I can't remember the last time I bought a platinum game. It seems to be all the people who aren't so frantic about getting the newest games or most anticipated games first, that buy platinums. I'm frantic about things like that, which explains why I never buy Platinum games. The only situation I can think of myself buying a platinum game would be if I had never heard much of it, but it looks good. Doesn't sound very clever does it?...but it could happen!

The fact of the matter is, when games go Platinum we can't really complain, after all, it's our decision whether to wait for it to go platinum or whether to get it straight away! Most of us here probably get games as soon as possible and can't push ourselves to waiting for a mere price drop...well it seems mere at the time. Whilst less serious gamers CAN wait and get the best games at a cheaper price. It's up to them if they want to do that, but I don't have a choice. It's like something's forcing me to want to buy a hyped up game as soon as I can..it's madness, madness I tell ya!

If only I could wait, after all, good things come to those who wait. Right?

The fact is, waiting for price drops isn't as easy at it sounds. You try watching all your friends play the newest games and hear them brag on about it, THEN try and wait...it's IMPOSSIBLE!

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but it is very hard. If you're in with gaming, there's a certain thing that keeps telling you to keep up with the times.

I can imagine that if I waited for games to go Platinum I would later regret it because I would have missed out on all the fun of owning it first. I mean, you can't exactly go and brag about platinum games because the majority of gamers would've played them dry!

So is it really worth the wait?

It's even worse with PCs. They drop in price every month. If you want something you have to pay for it at the price it is at the time. If you keep waiting for the price-drops you will never get what you want.

You're right El Blokey ...ANOTHER reason. :)

The Playstation2 and the GameCube are both consoles that I admire (PS2 mostly) because firstly they're both worth their asking price and secondly they stick to an average price for their games, which can now be bought for an even lower price in stores.

The GameCube put both Sony and Microsoft to shame however as they stuck to the price that both the PS2 and Xbox dropped down to, £199.99, and then went further onwards to drop the price again. Clever move from Nintendo that rewarded them with plenty more profit. This meant that fans didn't have to wait for a reasonable price drop to £199, even though Nintendo dropped their price again. I don't think any Nintendo fan would've been phased by that though because Nintendo were being generous to begin with.

Good post.

It's another reason why the PS2 is so far ahead, really. An inferior machine technically, but the market leader by a mile.
