Anyone know much about video cameras?
Can you recommend good makes, styles, and features etc and the average price I should pay.

And as for editing, I am starting a Media course at college on Monday where they have a newly built editing suit, so that should help me a bit.

Thanks, brought a Sony today but not digital. Digital is a little over my budget. The one I brought (some style of Sony Handycam) takes them HI8 tapes...which I am told are the closest to digital quality? Anyway came to a total of £390 after I brought a case and tapes. It's charging upstairs ready to be taken out later to film...stuff.

Depends what you want to do.

Personally I'm a fan of the Sony mini-DV cameras because they provide the best all-round features, and they're relatively easy to hook up to a computer (check to see if you have a firewire (IEEE 1394) port - if you don't then you'll need to pay about £40 for a card with one in). They record at broadcast quality and also, because it's Sony, they have a wide-range of accessories that are easy to get hold of.

If you want a camera for making films then a mini-DV is passable, but you might want to go for something a little meatier. In which case I'd ask er-no which id the best one to go for, as he knows these things.

For the DV cameras you're looking at a price of around £1,000, but if you get a non-digital camera that price starts to fall very quickly. A grand sounds like a lot of money (because it is) but it is worth it. When you buy a camera you are ultimately going to want to get what you have filmed off the camera and on to something else. If you have an analogue camera then you can get it on to a PC but it's tricky and disc-consuming, otherwise you have to hook the camera up to a VCR and do some stop-play editing. And as editing platforms VCRs suck. A computer with Adobe Premiere and some plug-ins can make film look however you want it to look, and for that I think it's worth paying to get a digital camera rather than an analogue one. (although getting stuff off my PC and on to video usually involves dragging the bloody thing downstairs and setting it up next to my VCR, which is a lot of hassle... it's worth it though :-)

hope that helps some.
