Define sports you ask? Well, I don't consider BMX, car games, skateboarding, mud wrestling or anything like that a sport. If I did I wouldn't have made this topic. :)
What I'm talking about is the REAL sports that appear on the back of almost every paper all over the world. Now, I'm not too great a fan of Rugby which could explain perfectly why I haven't really gone searching high hills and mountains for such games, but surprisingly I bought EAs Rugby 2001 last year!
I had certainly overdone myself on this one. Before I switched it on though, I was continuously convincing myself to LIKE IT whether it was good or bad just because of the mere fact that I spent quite a lot of money on a game with little reputation. And as I thought it would be, the game stunk. The only reason I bought it was for the brilliant preview I saw, which looked nothing like the real thing. The graphics wasn't too great, but the gameplay was! Now, why couldn't I like a game that played brilliantly? Is it because it's made by EA? No. More because of my liking! I'm sure everybody realises that it's much better playing than watching what you see on TV, and this was the same thing with this game, but I couldn't get rid of the fact that I'm not a great fan of rugby, which simply meant that I had been fooling myself.
Apart from Rugby, there are other sports that I don't like to watch, like Cricket, Baseball, and all the underdog events that we see in the Olympics like 'Curling'. But could this be because of media publication? Probably! I never thought that advertisements on the TV would ever make me go and buy something like toilet roll or anything like that, but even then I always seem to prefer the brands from the adverts. This is the same with sports. There are plenty of different sports around, but the ones that get advertised receive the majority of the viewers interest.
Remember when I defined 'Sports', well I got that definition from what is mostly viewed on TV. I even see Snooker now as a sport when it doesn't need or has anything physically challenging.
I like to buy football games, not just because of how good they are but also because I'm a fan of the sport. If you weren't a fan of the sport, it could be the difference between choosing say a basketball game on the same shelf over a decent footy game. It all depends on your liking really.
Or is it? Basketball games also tickle my fancy not just because it's good to watch, but also because it's a sport that seems to be imitated perfectly as a game. The same with football and tennis. But then again, so is Cricket, Baseball, Ice Hockey and so on ... they are all been perfectly imitated as a game, so imitation cannot be the reason alone.
The majority of women don't like football, or don't have a clue about what it's all about. Why? Because they are occupied by other media types like beauty, soaps and so on. So it is all due to what we like or prefer.
Media does affect our liking though, but not as much as you think. Cricket has been advertised a lot recently, but it still hasn't got me watching it. Give me a Cricket game to play, and I will greatfully oblige, but give me a cricket video, and thats a big "NO NO"! Watching is not as popular as playing, but this still doesn't mean that you'll ever catch me buying a cricket game.
So as you can see, it all comes down to what you like really and if you think deep down inside that it would be worth buying. Previews and reviews (both mediatypes) can alter your decision, but what you fancy remains the dominant factor.

I go for football games mainly cos thats the sport I follow and I find most intresting. And I dont really get stuff like cricket, cos I find it boring and also there just plain hard with all the meter things.
