We all know about Super Mario by now. How he first appeared in 1981, how his games were revolutionary in so many ways, and how he has become the worlds most recognised videogames character - but what about his brother Luigi Mario? He may be the lesser popular, but he was the one responsible for Mario going multiplayer!

Luigi first started out as Mario's equal, but in green, in the Arcade, Nintendo Entertainment System and Atari game, Mario Bros. Mario Bros, although not Mario's first ever game, is the first game to be named after Mario himself. Luigi was the second player's character who, although looked exactly the same, was coloured green instead of red to stop confusion between the players who played this fairly basic game simultaneously. This game was a hit of it's time, though Luigi wasn't really considered a major character - just another Mario for two player action.

He didn't make his first proper appearance til 1985 when Super Mario Bros was first released into the world. Luigi still looked very similar to Mario, but still wore green. Instead of being a simulataneous character this time, each player of Super Mario Bros took it in turns to complete each stage, racing to see who can get the furthest the quickest. This game was a hit on the NES and was soon made into a cartoon series and gave the Mario brothers personalities. That way people could see a difference between the characters and there'd be very few confusing Luigi for a vegetarian Mario! In Japan, a Super Mario Bros add-on game, sold seperately, called Super Mario Bros 2, had Luigi as a very different character. He was a slower runner, yet he could jump higher than Mario, thus Luigi having his own special characteristics making him different to Mario.

However, everwhere else in the world, Super Mario Bros 2 was very different indeed. Based on a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic, you could select one of four characters each time you lost a life or started a new level. Luigi kept his special characteristics from the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 (later released elsewhere as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels), though the game he starred in became one of the least popular Mario Bros titles to date! The method of play was too different and didn't suit the Mario characters. However, Nintendo made up for this atrocity of a Mario title by releasing the third game in the 'Super' series.

Super Mario Bros 3, to some, is considered the best Mario game ever to be released! It went back to it's roots, being a run and jump and squash game instead of a run and jump and pick up the veg and run and throw the veg game. It had some modifications and a level select screen, and even had it's own version of the original arcade hit, Mario Bros, as a two player minigame! So as well as teaming up, taking it in turns to proceed further through each world, skipping the levels the other Mario brother had already completed, you could also compete for items, or just for the sake of it, in the original arcade game! Luigi went back to his Super Mario Bros roots for this game though, having the same abilities as Mario, but on the plus side he kept his trimmer, taller figure!

Suprisingly, Luigi has hardly had a role in any of the GameBoy Mario games! He appeared in the Game Boy Color version of Super Mario Bros, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, but none of the Super Mario Land games starred Luigi at all! Seems like Mario was only single-player on the GameBoy - which is a shame.

Anyway, the good news is, Luigi was back right away with Super Mario Allstars on the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Allstars, for those of you who don't know, was a compilation of all the Super Mario Bros games from the NES, including The Lost Levels, having it's first ever European release. The games were graphically and audiably updated, giving Luigi a better look than before, thus getting rid of any confusion the simple minded few people of this world may still have had by the Super Nintendo's release.

Super Mario World, however, was Mario's first brand new game on the Super Nintendo. Similar to Super Mario Bros 3, you could team up with a mate to help each other through the 90+ levels contained in this mighty game! Luigi, again, didn't have any differences to Mario in terms of play, but if you liked green more than red, then you had the opportunity to play as player 2.

Super Mario Kart was a briliant SNES release starring Luigi. Said to be one of the greatest games ever created, you raced against many other Mushroom Kingdom favourites to get the gold. Although a few of the characters in the game had different abilities, Luigi still played exactly the same as Mario! Was a great shame that, but the game was still brilliant!

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island showed the early lives of Mario and Luigi, making them out to be twins (despite Super Smash bros. Melee claiming Luigi to be Mario's younger). In this tale, baby bowser actually kidnapped Luigi and you had to play as Mario, riding Yoshies of all the colours of the rainbow to rescue the green baby plumber. Although it was a very good adventure (with hidden multiplayer mini-games that few know about), it wasn't classic Super Mario Bros.

On the Nintendo 64, Luigi had more of a role in just about all of Mario's games, except Super Mario 64. He featured in all the sports titles, the 'Mario Party' series and even had a picture of himself hidden in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. However, he never really had a starring role. He was always just an extra to play as, never quite had the stardom that he quite deserved. After all, he helped find Mario in the forgotten title, Mario's Missing on the NES and Super NES! Most of these games he did feature in, made Luigi out to be a coward, a scaredy-cat who would rather run than fight, but in the end, Luigi's pursaverence paid off.

Mario, for the first time in Nintendo history, didn't star in the first of Nintendo's very first own-made game on a Nintendo console! Luigi's Mansion had Luigi as the hero and Mario as the useless plumber who needed to be rescued! Although this game wasn't considered the best by some, mainly because of it's lack of replayability value and it's length, Luigi had his own quality title, without Mario as a playable character! Sure, it wasn't what everyone expected, being a kind of Ghostbusters game, but it sure was a fun game!

So that's basically the past and present of Luigi's life, whilst missing out the mentioning of games that weren't so important in his life, but including the main changes in his appearances and how he started out! Now you know, you're educated! Now read up on Mario again :)

Of course - no-one could topple Mario - not even Sonic or this new Blinx guy on the X-Box.

But think of how different it could all be if Luigi was in all those games instead of Wario... You could've been sat there saying that Luigi would have the better chance of the 2, and not Wario.
But by being different to Mazza, Wazza does have a better chance.

If Luigi was more of a varied character compared to Mario than the wimp he is now he'd surely be in with a better chance. But he is just too similar to him really.

Kinda like how Waluigi is similar to Wario.

If there was to be a strong contender for holding the title of 'Top Nintendo Character', I reckon it would either be Wario or Luigi, however, much to the green plumber's dismay, I reckon it would be Wario who'd have the better chance.

After all, Wario, although supposedly being evil (he has an excuse, he was bullied by Mario and Luigi!)he has a large fanbase for his Wario Land games. I still prefer the original Wario Land, which did feel like a proper fun game, compared to the boring 'transform to get past' levels of Wario Lands 2 and 3 (I haven't played 4).

Wario is getting his own 3D game now, and hopefully that goes back to his Super Mario Land 3 roots, but atleast the game looks better than Luigi's Mansion did. So far there's been nothing about another Luigi game, and I reckon we'll definately see more of Wario in the future.

No one will top Mario though :)

I still think that Shigsy needs to give Luigi a REAL Mario-style adventure rather than a lame, half-@rsed effort like Luigi's Mansion.

Just think... the brothers who have worked well together ever since the release of Mario Bros. could become rivals if Luigi's games were to become a success and REALLY challenge Mario for his throne a LOT better than the likes of Crash Bandicoot can do!

Nintendo could make so much more money if they both went their seperate ways - just like how Wario split-away from Mario Land 2.
Then again, you could say that about any of the characters to have featured in the Mario games - even Peach.

I'm sure Mario would still remain no.1 and all, but there must be a lot that Luigi has to offer us - maybe something envolving Waluigi, who has one of the worst names ever!

It all depends on the player.

Sure, he has different moves, but I find him easier to knock out than Mario in Super Smash Bros Melee.

Anyway, the only other changing he's done in Super Smash Bros Melee, is wear real denim dungarees!
