It was recently brought to my attention that putting my GameCube on a carpet will cause dust to get into the machine, or for it to overheat. I checked through my Nintendo GameCube manual and couldn't find anything on this.

I've had my GameCube on my carpet since May 3rd but I'm getting a desk soon. Is this true? What are the ideal conditions for my 'Cube? I want to take good care of it, so I would be grateful for some detailed answers.

Just stuck my copy of 'Guinness World Records' underneath it (knew that would come in handy one day) and gave the fan a good blow (not that you dirty...).

If it's been working fine, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem till you get a desk or something similar.

I'd get it off the floor, or put something under it.
It figures that the cooling fan would draw dust in there if there's pleanty of dust around. It also figures that ninty will have accounted for this in the design, so you shouldn't have any problems, but it doesn't take much to get it out of harms way, and prevention is better than cure.

Put it next to a radiator. That will sort out your problems.

Well, no problems have arisen as of yet so do you think it would be okay to leave it there temporarily?

To Whitestripes: Fool.

Get it on a flat-surface that isn't your floor mate.
