The future of gaming

Right now we are enjoying the consoles like ps2 and X-box, which claim to be the most powerful yet. With their bigger memory cards or better Controllers, things couldn’t really get much better, or could they? So where do they go from here?

By the start of next year, the ps2 promises you the option of playing games online. The first major title of this capability will be Final Fantasy 11. it says quoted from http://ff11online.deep-ice.com/ that “Final Fantasy XI ( FFXI ) is the first ever Online RPG of its FF series. The network world is called Vana'diel, which the player itself will be the "character" of the game, What's special about Online RPG is the feature of "Communication" with other players. That does not change even with FFXI. They have prepared the user friendly "Chat System", "Friend Registry" for you to communicate with. It helps the understanding of each player in the game. Making friends in games are more fun to play with, also it helps you to advance the game in a faster pace. The systems in Online RPG has expanded the enjoyment of the game by many times”. While we speak Squaresoft are already launching a upgrade disc for Final Fantasy 11. Although Grand Theft Auto done something like this, it was only an add on whereas Final Fantasy 11 has the ability to be upgraded. Again quoted from http://ff11online.deep-ice.com/, it states the upgrade features:
· % of receiving an item from some monsters
· New quests added
· New production recipe added
· New items added
· New emotion added
· Correction to Job System
· Magic/ability correction/ new magic/ability added
· Window patter added.
By the looks of this, it wouldn’t be worth the bother unless it was cheap to purchase, but you know those crazy japs.
So after the world has gone online, what would be next? Speaking to people over mics? Web cams in our consoles? They already have this planted onto our personal computers so why not add them to consoles since they’ll be online. The advantages of this is to actually see and speak to the person you’re communicating with on the screen. It makes a more friendly approach to the game as you feel you’re friends with each other. The disadvantage of this is as obviously the cost of doing this. If you have to buy it yourself it will cost a lot and if it comes included with the console, you can imagine the price of that. Another disadvantage is a contradiction of the advantage. What if you see a small girl in front of your eyes or even a fat 33 year old man. This will easily put you off working with them and then the friendly approach is gone.

Next up in the future would have to be virtual reality. With graphics getting so good and realistic, this is the obvious next step. Businesses and driving schools use this kind of technology already but to teach. What if this kind of thing was introduced to games? You can step into another world and do what you want. A nice chat to friends or Doing a Grand Theft Auto type effect by stealing cars and shooting down rivals. However with this type of thing going on, some would be put off by the idea, as this would encourage violence. This is taken from http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/animation/Animation.html and gives a little info on how the virtual reality would work.
Specifying the motion of animated characters in computer animations and virtual environments is a difficult problem. Here, in the animation group, we are exploring one possible solution to this problem: applying controls algorithms to physically realistic models of the systems that we would like to animate. Our goal is to allow the animator to control the system at a high level and let the underlying simulation compute the details of the motion. Because we wish to produce natural looking motion, we evaluate the performance of our methods by comparing the computed motion to that of humans performing similar manoeuvres. In particular, we are interested in simulating human motion of dynamic behaviours such as running, bicycling, diving and vaulting. To smooth out the motion produced by simple models of the human body, we add secondary motion to the animations with simulations of clothing, a flexible trampoline, and splashing water. We have also implemented algorithms for group behaviours that allow a number of simulated bicyclists and robots to move together while avoiding obstacles.

If you could understand any of that, it was saying that getting to the virtual reality phase is going to be too hard as they have to simulate all the motions of people and this would also take too much time and money. Also having a virtual reality world would be a huge problem because not being in the real world will encourage bad behaviour and to the extreme, bad crimes like raping a good looking woman or shooting someone you hate. Even if the others couldn’t feel these attacks, it would certainly encourage it outside the virtual world.

Does the prospect of this sound any good? Obviously we are all looking forward to new technology to come our way and make gaming better but for now I’m off to play with my good old regular console.
