'Hillbilly Havoc: Kentucky Mud Rock 2' has been confirmed for a spring 2003 release on PC and Playstation 2 in the UK, just 3 months after the US
release. With an enhanced battle system, a new party feature, and improved
AI for the non-playable characters the game looks set better the excellent
original.

The game follows on from where the original 'Kentucky Mud Rock' left off,
with your character having made it home in time for the village fete, and
winning the mullet contest. Things don't stay so blissful for long though,
as a gang of rogue hillbillies come downstream from the mountains and thieve the towns most valuable artefacts, the gold toof of empowerment and dirty red cap of knowledge. Once again it's up to you to save the day, and recover these artefacts.

The major difference between this game and it's prequel is that you no
longer have to go on the quest alone, as four others can travel with you.
This party will change as you progress through the game too, with a total of 15 characters to choose from. As you set off on your quest Mary Lou will join you, a mean shot with her father's shotgun. By the time you reach the next town you should also have enlisted an old doctor to your party, and a huge black guy who is on the run from the Klan. Other potential party members have yet to be revealed, as developer Chocolate Blinkers wishes to keep this secret until gamers discover the people on their travels. It's rumoured that you may e able to enlist the help of some of the characters that featured in the first game, but Chocolate Blinkers refuse to confirm this.

The battle system has had a huge make-over to work with the party you now
travel in. It's real time, with you selecting a character, and pointing it
at what you want it to attack. You can use a couple of your characters to
gang up on an enemy, or all fight separately. The differences between the
enemies will mean all kinds of strategies will have to be adopted in order
to come out on top. Using items in battle may lead to you taking damage, as you'll be unable to defend yourself during that time, so it's wise to use another character to distract any potential enemy attacks. Also, the scope of the magic attacks has been increased, with a far larger quantity of spells at your disposal.

Another great feature of Hillbilly Havoc is that the non-playable characters are much more fun than before. No longer will they walk in a set pattern, and simply state the same line no matter what. If you block the path they may demand that you get out of the way, and others may need a little persuasion to reveal their information. Having your party surround them often does the trick though! Also beware of violent NPC's. Ask them the same question twice and they may well punch you in the face! Worse still, whilst talking to an NPC his accomplice may try to pick the pockets of one of your party. No longer are towns and villages safe havens, you have to keep your wits fully about you.

Graphically this game puts the original to shame. It's hard to believe that such graphical progress can be made in the short time since the original, with characters now displaying incredible amounts of detail. Mary Lou, for instance, has acne, as the days pass some spots get bigger, other disappear. Also, if you watch her whilst not doing anything she may pick them, especially if close to a mirror. This is just one example of the detail in the game, watch as your characters get dirty as they travel, and clean up after a stay at an inn. Also take note of the way your characters trousers react to attractive females. You can clearly see him showing an interest in some girls!

If you think the graphics are special, you wait until you hear the music.
The tunes are amazing, especially if you come across any kids playing banjo in the streets. You can also buy a banjo, which gives you power over the tunes played in the game. Apparently there will be another use for this banjo too, exactly what we'll have to wait and see.

'Hillbilly Havoc: Kentucky Mud Rock 2' really does appear to be the game
that's going to break the boundaries of what to expect in am RPG. With a
further 3 months before the US release it can only get better too. Do not
miss this game! This truly is the future of gaming. (Well, if it was real)
