Probably because the Playstation doesn't take kidly to pirates. And I somehow doubt it is really for backup purposes.
Your PS2 needs to be chipped. But if you chip your PS2, it will ring Sony up and start shouting "PHONEY! YOU'RE A PHONEY! A BIG FAT PHOOONEY! HEY EVERYONE, LOOK, THIS GUY'S A PHONEY!" Before growing legs and running off into a river.
So I wouldn't bother.
