(PART 1)
Hello everyone. I was absolutely crapping myself when I saw the graphics on Final Fantasy X - so movie like! So, being the gullible so and so that I am, I asked the kind person by the counter what you needed to play that game on. They said something about a playing station 2, but this didn’t make sense so I asked the assistant to get the product for me.
The assistant came back with a big blue box (hah, B.B.B.!) and a small case - apparently, this was all I needed to play FFX. I asked how much it all cost, and to my surprise - it wasn’t near £50, not even around £100 - oh no, the total came to £230!!! The assistant said that there was already a discount because I bought a game with the machine at the same time, but of course, I didn’t believe a word of it. I mean £230 just to watch something!!! So I then asked what other things the machine in the big blue box could do.
“Play DVD games and music CDs,” the assistant blurted out.
Naturally, I was puzzled by these combinations of letters, and asked for examples. The assistant then pointed towards a stack of cases similar to the packaging of FFX that I had bought, but with different pictures on the front. One of them in particular caught my eye by the name of Mary Poppins, which I briefly recall as a film, so I assumed that the entire shelf was made up of films.
“Interesting,” I thought. If this machine can play all these films AND games, the possibilities are endless!!! I mean, I could watch FFX AND Mary Poppins on the same machine!!! WOW!!! I then saw a few more items to my liking; something called “Super Monkey Ball” seemed to make me laugh, and this “Dead or Alive 3” will surely impress my friends judging by the pictures on a board.
So, I arrived back home half an hour later, with the blue box and various items under my arm. I opened the box to find a black box with fin like properties on it, and was quite impressed by the aesthetics. Although I managed to make the thing work, I couldn’t find the “tray” the manual informed me of that would let me use the FFX package I had bought. I tried to place FFX into the tray that opened as it said in the manual, but it didn’t seem to fit - my copy of FFX was too large to fit properly into the tray.
To be continued…
(PART 3)
Previously on “The Devilish PS2”… But what happened next would never be forgotten for the rest of my life…
As I closed the tray, instead of preparing the movie as it had done with FFX, the tray began to make strange noises - louder and more surreal than it had done previously. Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, the red cloud came back again!!! Being the brave person that I was, I cautiously moved to open the tray - but before I could do that, the machine made a loud noise and soon after the red cloud and noises had disappeared.
But the torment was not over - a hideous smell now came from the back of the machine - as if it had a life of its own and wanted to start a fire!!! I my house! At this point, I made a very brave decision, and just grabbed the small machine and threw it out through the front door.
I can’t remember what happened next, as I must have blacked out from the intensity of what had just occurred - but at least I was safe, away from any machine that risked taking over my house. I phoned the helpline again when I plucked up the confidence to, expecting some comfort - but when they heard my account of the machine trying to start a fire, ending with the tossing of the black box outside, the woman changed her tone to a firm voice - and said that it was MY fault and that there was NO CHANCE of a refund.
I put the phone down, shocked by what the previously helpful phone line woman had said to me. It then came to my head - they were on the same side all this time. My heart was almost broken that two great powers could conspire in the destruction of an innocent person’s home, and possibly even life. It really makes me think twice before I mess with blue boxes and circles again.
*Fin*
:-D
(PART 2)
Previously on “The Devilish PS2”… I tried to place FFX into the tray that opened as it said in the manual, but it didn’t seem to fit - my copy of FFX was too large to fit properly into the tray…
Sensing a fault, I phoned the helpline to rectify the problem, and luckily, they were very helpful in solving the problem. The woman on the phone was very kind and polite, and within a matter of seconds I found out that the problem was that the case could be opened to reveal a circular object that would run FFX, just like a book can also be opened. However, it was difficult getting the thin circle out of the opened case, until I found a button that can make the thing “pop” out. Amazing what they think of today!!!
Anyway, I carefully slid the circle into the tray, and pushed it back in. Within seconds, a movie featuring 8 characters was displayed on my TV. Excellent!! Just what I wanted. But pretty soon there was another problem - the movie ended and a screen with two lines and an arrow appeared, with “NEW GAME” on one line and “LOAD GAME” on the other. I was extremely confused by this, and even more so that nothing happened for quite a long time. I waited for ten minutes, only to be brought back to the same movie I had seen already!!! I gave up trying and decided to see if the other items I had bought were of any use.
Dead or Alive sounded mighty serious, so I braced myself for a rough ride. I saw pictures of some lovely ladies in the movie, so I was half expecting some sort of fight between the two genders, with the serious face on the front making up my mind. I wasn’t expecting, however, to find that the circle would bring up a message along the lines of,
“Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation2 disc.”
And to make it worse, there was this strange, red cloud in the background, which looked like it was about to kill me. I was really scared.
I opened the tray and wrapped the circle with five layers of kitchen towel before throwing it away, in case the red cloud came back. When the message and cloud disappeared from the TV, I was feeling more relaxed, and began to investigate why the disc would do such a thing. I soon came to the conclusion that the evil originated from the green case that contained the circle previously - and so I threw this hideously coloured item as well in fear of revenge in disposing of the circle. I quickly moved onto the next item.
Judging by the name, I thought “Super Monkey Ball” would be in the comedy range of films, and opened the case in the same way as I did for the FFX and Dead Or Alive 3 movie to find out. The case was black, which was no cause for concern. Surprisingly, the circle I had expected was about half the size of that of FFX!!! I couldn’t believe it, considering that both items were worth £40 each!!! Nevertheless, I placed the tiny circle into the tray once again, determined not to judge by first impressions.
But what happened next would never be forgotten for the rest of my life.
To be continued…(again)
