Well of course it's never going to be as good as Photoshop, but it's not 100% inferior and coding languages is something the GNU do rather well...

Yes.

Yes, but not as advanced as Photoshop 7.0> On the other hand, the last time I used Photoshop it didn't handle text as vectors either.

You can output to Photoshop format files.

Never looked, but I doubt it, seeing as the SDKs cost money.

And you would want to... why? But yes, you can. (and I'm not comparing it to Illustrator or Freehand you folol ;-))

So there's a use.
The GIMP has many, many non-niggly advantages over Photoshop that actually have real worth, but it's not perfect and I don't think it's better.

For a hacked together XML/JS interface, Fireworks has done very well in the industry comapred to an opensource prog primarily aimed at the *nix market that's not deemed worthy of use buy any professional worth his money!! I finally got round to playing with GIMP on my G4, and although it is quite "nice" for an OpSrc prog I can't see myself using it as my primary editing tool.
But then again, I don't need to as I have the joy of a company budget to purchase all of my software and a CDR to nick it all for home use!;-)
One question about GIMP... Does it allow you to use Kai/AlienSkin filters? and does it use Vectors at all? (mainly in text and shapes?) Finally, if exporting from GIMP to Freworks or Photoshop, does the output file retain it's layers in the other programes? Does GIMP accept files from Illustrator and Freehand (.ai/.fh)? and can you output to .swf from GIMP?
I've only ever used it to convert non PC origonated images on a MAC to enable ne to use them on a PC as my MAC copy of Photoshop is a little outdated?
I actually won my copy along with the rest of StudioMX... As for it's power in bitmap editing, it is quite powerful for the job it is designed to do and that is "Web" graphics, hence why it doesn't have the full functionality of Photoshop as this is an "Image" editing suite designed for print (initially). As for filters, it'll use all the standard photoshop ones once you've told it where they are.
Also, if your vaugly clever, you can write your own filters and commands for Fireworks using JS and XML and increase it's functionality no end (unlike Photoshop!)
FireworksMX is a stupidly powerful tool and the best incarnation of Fireworks to date, It could still do with a few tweaks here and there, but for the job it's designed to do, it's the best.
> all i can and will say is: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :P
*slaps Nimco again for not realising*!!
I've never really sat downwith Fireworks to try and work out all the complex functions, i've started using it a bit more recently for small buttons..etc
*loads up Photoshop*
