Just because Luigi is the younger brother of the short, stumpy Italian Plumber in red himself, many people were lead to believe that Luigi's big-break in Luigi's Mansion would be just as-great-as the likes of Mario 64 and Mario World. But when the facts came-out about this game, it all became to look so different. Like a dissapointment.
Too many (mainly Nintendo fans) this game hasn't come to be that short-lived piece of poo many were expecting to arrive along with the GameCube's release. In fact many Nintendo fans, including myself, believe that this game is good while it lasts. And that there is more fun to sucking-up ghosts than what first meets the eyes here - thanks to Nintendo.
If the truth be told then it is simply this:
'Mario is no.1, Luigi is a flop' when it comes to starring roles.
After all, this isn't the first time we've seen the lanky wimp take matters into his own hands...
Remember Mario is Missing from years ago? Very few people could proudly say that was a 'great' adventure. Luigi set-out to rescue Mario back then in a short-lived, dull and over-anticipated adventure - in a similar way to that of Luigi's Mansion.
These are just to examples of 'Luigi Games', but the only message we seem to recieve is that Luigi simply isn't Mario, and that all of Luigi's starring-roles have fallen WAY behind every new adventure Mario has appeared in.
Why is this??
Is it to do with the fact that Mario is THE Nintendo Mascot??
Is it because Luigi is seen as no more than a lanky green wimp??
Or maybe the 'hero gene' can only be passed-down to one person during one set of brothers at a time??
Who knows!?? But does it really have any effect on the poor quality of Luigi's games?
Miyamoto must have chosen Luigi over Mario for at least one good reason...
If he did it to show that he is ready to take chances and try-out new ideas with a new console then I frankly feel he's got the wrond end of the stick! Everyone was expecting to see Mario on the GameCube's Launch Day, but instead we have Luigi and are left to realise that there's a fair wait untill the next Mario installment arrives. But giving us Luigi... that was wrong - especially in that kind of adventure!
If Luigi is to star in his own adventures in order to grab steal some of the attention from his podgy brother then what he needs is his own 3D adventure - and not something like Luigi's Mansion or Mario is Missing, where he is forced to make a name for himself in a world and experience that not even the 'great' Mario has yet experienced along his travels.
The Super Mario Bros. series on the NES, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and now Super Mario Sunshine.... these are the types of games Luigi will need to feature in if Shigsy wants to make him a success!
Sure, he has done it in the past, but when you're only available as an optional character for that second player in the earlier Mario titles, you just know you're not getting all the Magic Mushrooms you deserve!
Maybe Luigi could become the new guy to be tested in the RPG worlds of Mario RPG and Paper Mario-like games of the future, leaving Mazza free to deafeat Bowser in the average Adventures. Surely we're gunna get bored of these games one day, so by giving Luigi something 'different' yet 'appealing', Nintendo would always have something to fall back on.
It's not Shigsy's afraid to try-out new ideas or anything - just look at Pikmin, based on his own back-yard. Maybe he could give Luigi his own adventure exploring the unknown depths of Shigsy's Toilet for example??
And what if Luigi Games did suddenly become no.1 over Mario's??
There'd now be full-blooded competition between the 2 brothers, with the money flying in for each and every Mario or Luigi game they bring out.
C'mon Shigsy, Luigi needs a real chance to proove himself!
It's fine that you were trying to proove he's not a wimp by beating the ghosts in Luigi's Mansion, but that classic 'Mario Adventure' we love just wasn't there - like in Mario is Missing.
Look at Yoshi in the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. You gave the green dinosaur a real Mario-type adventure there, and the future GBA Title had soon become a huge success on the SNES - just like Mario World.
You know it makes sense!
By favouring one son over the other, you're only showing-off you're bad parenting skills, 'MR. Mario'!!
You could alternate between the two, it would be fantastic! Imagine using Luigi's unique high jump to get onto ledges, or when you're in Bowser's castle, taking different routes, then getting petrified when they accidentally bump into each other.
I would like to see Luigi get more starring roles, but I think at the end of the day he will never take Mario's platforming crown. The vast majority of people would probably prefer to control the fat red one than the thin green one, and Mario is definitely more recognised. Hopefully though, Luigi will star in some more innovative titles. I also pray this happens with Yoshi too. Since Yoshi's Story on the N64 (good, but far to short... maybe that was Nintendo's first try at the short but sweet strategy?) He hasn't had his own outing, and while an appearance in Sunshine is extremely welcome, I'd still love to see him star in his own adventure.
