Police, fire brigade, NHS and ambulance services, military etc.
It appears I was greatly mistaken.
My council informs me that I pay for police protection through my council tax. Now, the police where I live are particularly inept. They care only for trying to catch out the local students. Any REAL crimes are almost always completely overlooked. I'm in a high-band area, so my coucil tax bill is fairly sizable. If I were to live in, say, somewhere further north, in a lower band area, where they pay less for their police protection, I would probably actually get a higher quality service.
A good example of the local ineptness was when there was a serious domestic going on in the flat downstairs from me. Shouting and screaming at 2am, followed by the sounds of first doors slamming, and then chairs and other furniture being thrown around the flat. Children bawling their eyes out and finally some bloke being locked out of the flat. This guy proceeded to try and break the door down. It is at this point I called the police. 30 minutes later, the guy gets bored of slamming his fists into the door and leaves. 5 minutes later, the police arrive.
I live less than 5 minutes WALK from the police station. They could have had a car there in 30 seconds, and it took them 35 minutes to arrive. They must have recieved my call, and thought "yeah, we'll sort that after we finish our coffee - and this game of monopoly. just before leaving, they feel a rumble in their stomach and stop for a sandwich before leaving.
So to be honest, I feel like I'm wasting my money paying for this service, and have told my local authorities as much. Not that they care.
So, if the money isn't REALLY going on police protection, then what is it going on? Bin collection? unnecessary roadworks? What else?
I ADVISE ALL OF YOU TO STAY IN EDUCATION AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.
The day you become a regular taxpayer is the day you start getting used to being anally raped by the loving government on a daily basis.
Talking about poor police coverage...
The police station in my town is literally a 2 minute walk from the bus station and taxi ranks where everyone gets stabbed... do you see police there? Do you fun.

How lovely. I can't wait to grow up.
For 5 days.
Viva la reveolution.
They also lost a payment of ours totaling several hundred pounds and we had to pay it again due to their incompetence (they never issued a receipt-we should have known better but..).
We also pay for all the foreign temps to get the best jobs at the council (it's not me being xenophobic, it's the reality of market forces-they can afford to be more picky so the agencies give them more money and cushy jobs) who often set themselves up as a "company" so they don't even pay income tax, due to some loophole. So we have to pay even more tax ourselves.
All councils suck, especially mine.
