I saw something which particularly annoyed me a few months ago. I was reading the Sunday Times (as one does), and found a mention of "Video Games". The author mentioned that there are several sites on the internet, where people go into "obssessively detailed reviews about the latest games".

Fair enough, as a matter of opinion, but I then noticed, on the previous pages, a 7-page feature describing just about everything known about The Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, as the latest film. In the same section were smaller reviews of other films, as well as the latest books. Look for a moment and you might realise the problem. The author considers it reasonable to write many pages about a film or book, but identical or shorter reviews of games are "obsessive".

In case anyone cares, this is in the same newspaper as someone else wrote a three line section about the Gamecube, claiming that it is "significantly inferior in almost all opinion's to the Playstation 2". It seems that this person has probably played one game on each console, for about 5 minutes, and asked for the sales figures to decide which is best.

Can anyone show the world that gamers aren't all a bunch of wierdos (at least I'm not....)?? I'm not saying that parents shouldn't discourage children from playing games excessively, but too many people have a set view that ALL electronic games are somehow bad. Grr.. this really get's on my nerves.

Of course, this is slowly going away, as consoles (the PSOne and PS2 in particular) make their way into many living rooms. But it wil still be quite a while before many (especially older) people, are prepared to classify gaming as reasonable entertainment, on a par with TV, books and films.
