My first purchase was a Playstation which I bought in 1997. The main reason for buying it was to play Die Hard Trilogy. This game had truely blown me away with the graphics, gameplay and brilliant value for money. Offering three games in one made this an essential purchase and I was very happy with it for a long time. Whilst I owed the Playstation, I added a few more games which added to its life, namely Grand Theft Auto, Red Alert and Smackdown.
My next console was the Nintendo 64. I waited a while before buying this but once I had played Goldeneye, I, like many of my friends, just had to get this console. I still have the 64 but in all the time I have had it (4 years), the only games I bought were Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I didn't see any other games which jumped at me and begged me to buy them.
My third and final purchase was a PS2. My mate had had one for a long time with GT3 and a couple of other games but I wasn't tempted to own one at all. GT3 just seemed to be the same as GT2, which I already owned for the Playstation, with the obviously better graphics and extra cars. My mind was changed though on playing GTA3. This game was very addictive and I still play it now as it is perfect for just picking up and playing. There are no set rules and quite often I will spend an hour or two just cruising round causing as much destruction as possible!
At the moment I am not totally skint and could possibly afford to buy a NGC or XBox but I haven't seen or played any game which would make me want to buy one. My friend has just bought an Xbox with Halo and Agent Under Fire. Halo is good but it didn't astound me, perhaps I haven't played it enough. Agent Under Fire, however, is extremely disappointing. It feels like you are playing Time Crisis with the slow firing bullets and over elaborate car chases over which you have little control. I doubt it will be played much.
The Gamecube looks great with excellent graphics but there are no titles to tempt me. I feel that if Perfect Dark Zero is done properly then I will be getting the credit card out, I just hope that there are other games to tempt me too.
What am I missing in terms of these two consoles? Which games have made you buy the console?
Saved me some time.
