I am so desperate that I will watch anything!!
This was not the embarrassment I thought it would be. Respect to BBC Bristol for interviewing people like ourselves who, in their 20's and 30's get a real kick from video-games without being sad losers. The programme even featured girls who share our enthusiasm (a rare breed).
Better still, Father Ted followed on Channel 4!!
Because Sony is aiming the PS2 at 20/30 somethings then our "geek" image will hopefully disappear. Perhaps the Fleet Street hacks will take note of increasingly high profile advertising campaigns from Sony.
The only true representation of video games I have seen on TV is when Top Gear actually used Gran Turismo to demonstrate handling differences between several sports cars. Now THAT is real.
Why cant people who are not game fans just accept that this is another form of entertainment and no sadder or more pointless than watching the TV or going to see a film.
It is a harmless and fun way to relax.
There are various hobbies that people I know indulge in that quite frankly I think are really sad (eg collecting stamps, making models of little figures from famous battles etc) but they are not labeled KIDULTS.
I personally take that as an insult and wish that people could understand the attraction even if they dont share our enthusiasm for gaming. Nothing annoys me more than people who refuse to play games because they view it as a kids pastime and dont want to admit that they might enjoy it.
I will watch tonight and if the beeb insults us 'mature' gamers then I will be writing to complain.
This is the BBC's summary:
"Playstation 2: As the latest console is launched and targeted at 'kidults' - men in their 20s and 30s - That Thing looks at the rise of the computer game as a grown-up pursuit. Widescreen."
KIDULT....Oh for God's sake!
