Beat em ups have to be the best genre of gaming. Remember about ten years ago the arcade 'smash' PitFighter. At the time this was the best a game could look - pre Mortal Kombat digitized effects, how far have we come!! Sadly it didnt play as good as it seemed. I think it was a type of Kung Fu game with each character looking remarkably like one another. There was only a handfull of fighters you could choose from anyway (6-8) and all moves seemed to be the same. I must admit though, I dont know what it was about it but I spent hours on this down the local arcade. It really was an addictive game and it did look the business (Obviously being in 2-D), each fight was so realistic and there were no 'fireball' type moves. I suppose it could be classed as the UFC of its day.
When this game reached the home consoles (Megadrive, Master System, Atari Lynx) I was so pleased as it meant no longer having to waste my pocket money down the arcade. I had a Master System at the time so went for that. What a nightmare!! This wasnt the same game surely. They managed to ruin just about every aspect and this should rank as the WORST Master System title ever!! The game I know could never have matched the arcade conversion but they could have atleast tried (look at Mortal Kombat on MSX, that was brilliant). The fighters were so small it was difficult to see what was happening, the crowd in the background were bigger. The backdrops were dull, sound effects were laughable and the gameplay, Ha. Everything on screen happened about five seconds after you pressed the buttons, there were no way of doing any combos except punch L,R / kick L,R. It was too easy to complete, and had no long term value not even in 2-player.
This game was ridiculous. Thank god for revolution!!
