Funny topic title, hey? Well it’s not just there to get your attention, honest.

Isn’t it great, having a Gamecube! Look at all the great games we have coming out over the coming year:

Mario Sunshine
Starfox Adventures
Starfox shooter
Zelda
Mario Party 4
Metroid

Plus a hole bunch more, what a great line-up!

But, what then?

It looks to me that Nintendo may well have blown their stack in the first year, and you just can’t do it all over again too soon, it never works.

Do we really want to be enjoying the sloppy second adventures of Link, Mario and Samus on the Gamecube? I mean, isn’t part of their charm the fact that they’re once in a generation kind of games? Would we look back on Super Mario 64 with such fondness if it had been followed up by a couple of N64 sequels, with little progress between them? Maybe it would have tarnished them a little.

We got two Zelda games though, and that was alright, but there was time between them, and the second was sufficiently different. Mind you, surely if Nintendo did go down the road, they wouldn’t just rehash the same ideas, but still, they couldn’t possibly make EVERY title innovative enough, could they?

Even the SNES spaced out it’s releases. We had Mario to begin with, and over time we were introduced to Starfox, Samus returned in Super Metroid, and towards the end came the Donkey Kong days.

I just fear that the release list for late 2003/2004 could well see too many sequels to games that have already appeared on the Gamecube. Yeah it would be nice if we got a couple of adventures with our favourite characters, but one every year to 18 months could be overkill.

OR MAYBE Nintendo are looking at things differently. Show off the goodies early on, then give it a twist?

Maybe we’ll get online games with our favourite characters? Pokémon and Mario sports titles would be ideal candidates. Perfect Dark online would be a dream come true for many Nintendo gamers. But Nintendo have given the impression that they’re not to interested in going down this road, and I can see why.

So yeah, this year looks great, but what then? Will Nintendo give us a bunch of different titles, like the Doshin’s and Animal Crossings/ Leaders we’ll also see in the coming year? Will we get our favourite characters rehashed time and again? Or will Nintendo be able to deliver the goods without making us tire of putting on those blue dungarees again? I don’t want to be in a position where I’ve finished with all Nintendo have, and roll over and go sleep, not really interested any more.

Only time will tell, I guess.

Ooh...interesting.

Whilst I agree with your point to an extent, I'm not worried that will happen, for a number of reasons.

a) The games mentioned will most likely be classics. Hell, I'm still playing my N64! With games of that calibre, who needs constant updates and sequels? PLaying these games might last the GC's lifespan anyway.
b) Do you think you are being a little hard to please? During the era of the N64 the focus was on the software drought, the long wait before software releases, and such like. Now, Nintendo give the fans what they want, and you moan its all coming too fast, and they won't have anything after that? Oh ye of little faith...
c) Miyamoto has said in various interviews that he like to try and create new games, but the demand for updates of old franchises is so high he almost feels obliged to update them. But once he does, he can create new stars, and new franchises. Mario won't last forever...
d) Bar SA, you've forgotten one company - Rare. Banjo, DK, Conker, Perfect Dark, JFG could all be updated and (compared with the Nintendo franchises), as well as DKR and Kameo to look forward to. Rare kept the N64 going, and they could repeat that feat, even if they went multiformat.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with everything I wrote, I wrote it just to show another perspective. Personally, I can't wait to get my mitts on them. :D

Um, except it won't be a lineup. It'll just be games, for a console, that come out in a particular year...

Nintendo said that this year is "the biggest software line up ever" but next year it will be "The most original software lineup ever".

Good point. I think Dringo mentioned something along these lines a few months back...

This time next year Nintendo will have released games based on all their major franchises. Obviously some Spin-offs will follow (eg. Mario Kart) but I don't think their plans end there.

I'm guessing they're going to throw all their current franchises on the shelf to get early sales, and then introduce some new franchises (like Pikmin) to base a new franchise on. Develloping new franchises is very important. Mario and Sonic dominated merchandising in the early Ninties, Metroid and Zelda have huge followings and Pokemon made a fortune!
And I suppose we can expect a few sequels as well.

Also, next year is when Rare's titles will reach the end of their devellopment. Also, by this time next year, Sonic Team will have finished re-releasing their old games and will hopefully be churning out some fresh ideas.

Like Meka said, only time will tell...

As the expression goes "you can have enough of a good thing". However im not in the least bit worried that the nintendo titles will end up turning crap. Nintendo are bringing out these AAA titles to encapture a huge market, and i would rather have them released at the start of the consoles life instead of at the end. If nintendo do make sequels to these AAA titles i cant see Miyamoto releasing pantsness.

Odd that you mention this, because it's exactly what I've been thinking.

When I decided to get my cube it was solely because of the big names you mention. We get games as great (potentially) as those on the N64, but more of them and at a cheaper price. However, it has become pretty obvious that, with only a few exceptions, the 3rd party developers are just not producing that many great games. (And yes, the same can be said of the Xbox too- although the release games really were some of the best, since then it's all been too slow).

I find it interesting that games on Ninty consoles (well, the last 2!) tend to be few in number, but have a high proportion of great titles due to 1st and 2nd parties. Now Ninty seem to have added to that dream team with Capcom, and (maybe) Sega.

So, for people really into gaming it's great- provided you either have another console to keep you busy between games, or squeeze the life out of them!

The cube really is unlike the other 2 console in this respect
