In the days of the Spectrum, C64 right up to the end of the Amiga and ST's lives, you could go into any games shop (which were mainly WHSmiths, Boots and Woolies at the time. Yes, Boots did computer games, and they sold the games computers too!) and somewhere on the shelf would be a compilation.

Now they did vary between great and dismal, but nearly all had at least 1 good game on them and the cover art always made you want to buy them. In addition to this, they were the same price as one game. (check out Mega games 1, PREMIER COLLECTION, Action ST or They Sold A Million on ebay).

Now wouldn't it be good if we could have more of those for consoles these days?

All we've had so far is collections of much older games (Midway, Capcom, Sonic Mega Collection) or the occasional charity pack. How about old PS2 or Xbox games in one pack? Unrelated games from the same publisher (not just Halo/Halo2 pack etc) or even from different publishers under one heading, like 'Pure Gold Sports'?

Even more up-to-date retro compilations would be welcome. I'd love to see a Sonic Team pack (NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Sonic R etc...) or a Treasure one.

So, if we could have a compilation of older games from PS2, Xbox or Gamecube, what would you like to see and what would you call it?

Nice idea!

I remember buying Asterix for the master system from Boots. I guess the music stores weren't on the bandwagon then, and there were very few specialist games stores.

I think the problem with doing that for modern games is that, because new releases are followed more closely now, people would be more likely to already have at least one or two of the games - if they were reasonably good titles.
Plus people seem to interpret 'old' as 'less good'. With the speed of graphical development even within one console's life it's understandable - even if it is misguided.

If they only released lame titles that didn't shift many copies first time round, I don't think they'd do that much better on a second attempt.

Perhaps if somebody was keeping an eye out for gems that never got the attention they deserved first time round?

Also, it might work for, say, the wii or 360 - for people who didn't have the console first time round.
