1) Peter Kay - Live at the top of the tower (Excellent)
2) Denis Leary - No Cure for Cancer (Excellent)
3) Bill Hicks - One night stand (Reasonable)
Have you seen em? How do you rate em? And most importantly, can you recommend any more? I seem to remember seeing eddie murphy live on sky a while back, but can't find it anywhere. As I remember it, it was quite good.
I used to love Leary, like I said.
But having seen Hicks, Leary just came off as a guy pretending to be p###ed off.
And having seen how Leary has turned into Mr TV Banality since Hicks died, I'm convinced it was all just a gimmick with Leary.
Sure he was angry, but it lacked the passion and honesty of Hicks.
Wheras Leary would pretend to polish some bald-guys head for a laugh, Hicks used to smack himself in the head with his mic stand screaming "You just don't f###ing get it men, you don't feel the fire"
I prefer Hicks for being more honest, more intelligent and, ultimately, more relevant than the little fake Leary.
But this is just my opinion.
If you want to check out more Hicks, I'd suggest the following:
"Just a Ride/Totally Bill Hicks" A documentary produced for Channel 4 on VHS about his life, his comedy and his friends/family talking about why Hicks still matters to this day.
"Revelations" - the last major gig he played over here before he died. It's absolutely brilliant Hicks. He quit smoking 3 months before and is in a bad mood.
"Dangerous" - Hicks at Montreal. Very dark, very funny and contains a lot of bits from his CDs
"Sane Man" - available from sacredcow.com - unedited, unabridged Hicks.
I wasn't saying hicks is inferior though, but one night stand wasn't that good. I shall try and get some of his other material. i realise leary is ripping him off, I just think he takes the 'p*ssed off guy' act that one step further, and I am convinced the guy is seriously tapped in the head.
I was on a comedy site and they said richard pryor was excellent, but I wasnt sure with it being thirty years old. I liked him in the films hear no evil see no evil, and of course stir crazy.
"If the answer is up there I will give you the money myself".
- Chris Rock: Bring the pain
- David Spade: take the hit
I shall now
Ok, it's personal taste and I understand that.
The problem I have with Leary is that he 100% ripped off Hicks' work, toned it down and made it more palatable for the mass-audience.
Something he and Hicks had a falling out over.
Leary talked the talk, yet took the Heineken advert and sitcom route as quickly as possible.
A fake, posturing clown that has done ZERO stand-up since Hicks died in '94.
Instead he moved into movies with Sandra Bullock and some TV show.
(it's ok Goaty, not everyone has to like Hicks)
I used to listen to Leary and thought he was excellent, until someone played me a Hicks video and BAM, my 3rd eye was cleaned most definitely.
"One Night Stand" isn't the best example of Hicks' work. Check out "Revelations" or "Dangerous".
Or, for pure uncut Hicks, order Sane Man from sacredcow.com and see why I think Leary should be hung, drawn and quartered.
Other stand-up comedians I rate (again, just personal taste)
Richard Pryor. One of the fiercest comedians ever. Watch his two videos from the 70s and see just how powerful his material was at attacking racial issues, class issues and general humour as well.
Lenny Bruce. The original stand-up/social commentator.
"If you think sex is dirty, if you think the human body is filthy and your religion forbids me f####ing at every opportunity? Take it up with the manufacturer, 'cos if you're correct then it ain't my fault buddy"
