There WILL DEFINITELY be a Resident Evil sequel, and is called, ironically, Resident Evil 2: Nemesis, Empire Magazine say.

Nemesis Looms on the Horizon
It's a definite Resident repeat for this horror-thriller flick.

July 09, 2002 - It's good news for fans of the first Resident Evil motion picture; and to all the rest of you, well, you'll survive! Director Paul Anderson is definitely going ahead with a sequel to last year's Milla Jovovich-headlined zombie movie, and he gave Britain's Empire Online an update on its progress.

Anderson is well into writing the script at the moment, and he says things are progressing nicely. He intends to make Resident Evil 2: Nemesis a treat for fans of the video games and the first film.

The events of Nemesis will be set within the same timeframe as its arcade namesake, taking place both before and after the initial zombie encounter. In fact, the sequel will be kind of a bridging point between the movie and the games. "It will be survivors from the movie meet survivors from the video game," explains Anderson as he describes the script he's writing.

Gamers who were hoping for more characters from the console series might be more satisfied with the movie this time around. Nemesis will introduce familiar characters such as Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira as well as the Nemesis himself, the film version of a video game end-boss.

Anderson also squashes rumors that Milla Jovovich, heroine of the first picture, is lined up to be Jill in Resident Evil 2. He says he probably won't do any casting until his screenplay is complete. However, Nemesis does have a major role for Alice written in, and Anderson hopes that Jovovich will be interested in reprising that character. I'm sure all fans of the film would agree!

When asked by Empire Online, Milla Jovovich sounded interested but noncommittal about the project. "Well, I don't know. Maybe," she said. "I don't want to say anything because... I would love to do it but we'll see. We'll see how the script turns out." It sounds she wants a better script than Resident Evil had before accepting the job, and that's probably a wise decision on her part.

Production on Resident Evil 2: Nemesis is expected to begin next year. In the meantime, interested readers can look forward to the release of the Resident Evil DVD, which Anderson says will include an alternate ending to the film. A special edition is also planned for a later release in the US, with enough undivulged extras to warrant a two-disc set.

yet to see the first film, and having never played any of the games for more than 15 minutes, I doubt I will bother...

One of the worst films I've seen in a long time. There are better zombies in Buffy. Really. Thats how bad it was.

It sounds Ok I suppose, as long as Nemesis looks good, but I don't like the idea of Jill and Carlos being in it, especially Carlos, as he's too 'Resi 3' for me, the worst game out of the lot (except for, of course, Gun Survivor).

I want Jovovich to play Alice again, plain and simple. Keep Jill and Carlos out of it...

I've got resi evil on order now, as I've been hearing alot of good things about it. The trouble with the sequel is it sounds very much like resi 3, perhaps too much. If all the film turns out to be is resi 3 with the same situations and characters (I suspect nemisis will be in the film) all we will be left with is the uninteractive version of the said game.

It sounds really good, don't know how the game and film will come together so ill have to see, you could see from the end of the film there was gonna be a sequel from when she came out of the hospital and when they mention the 'Nemisis' project. Sounds very good though very promising
