Nothing. That's what. In gaming, there aren't any right or wrong choices. You choose what you want and decide on what you can afford - whether that be every console on the market (you lucky sods) or maybe just one. You purchase the games, consoles and accessories you can and want - you start playing - you have fun. What's wrong with that? Nothing.
What it does mean is that, because of your preference to a certain console, someone will argue against you, try to tell you your opinions are wrong and even go as far as insulting you because of it. That's because their opinions differ and they prefer a different console. In many cases they are wrong to judge as they haven't even tried the consoles or games they are slating. In some cases they are just expressing their opinion from actually trying them. However, no matter what their opinions are, they have no right to tell you what you shouldn't be playing.
Being a fan of a console more than another doesn't make you an evil person, doesn't make you some kind of jerk, and definately doesn't mean you're trying to put an end to gaming as we know it. Here are some more specific examples:
Being a Nintendo fan doesn't make you a six year old kiddie who thinks Pokémon are real. It doesn't mean you go to bed at 7pm and it doesn't mean you watch CITV. It doesn't mean you wont play on a Playstation 2 or X-box and it doesn't mean you're losing out on anything just because the latest console doesn't have a DVD player. It doesn't necessarily mean you hate everything Sony or Microsoft and it doesn't mean you'll never try a Final Fantasy game. It doesn't mean that all games you play will have a green tick next to '3+' on the ELPSA rating sticker and it doesn't mean that your hands are tiny. It doesn't mean that you can't play a game with less than 36,000 different bright colours in every frame and it doesn't mean that you can't afford the other consoles.
Being a Sony fan doesn't mean you're more mature than a Nintendo fan. It doesn't make you and brighter, cleverer or more skillful at gaming. It doesn't mean that you don't enjoy gaming as much as anyone else and it doesn't mean that just because Sony make only a tiny percentage of games on their consoles that the Playstation 2 is crap. It doesn't mean that you are better than gamers of other preferences and it does mean that despite your strong opinions, you can still be wrong. It doesn't meant that you wont play a Nintendo or Microsoft console and it doesn't mean that you think SEGA's games are crap just because the Dreamcast didn't do too well against the Playstation 2. It doesn't mean that you wont play a game that has over three bright colours throughout the whole game and it doesn't necessarily mean you hate Nintendo.
Being a Microsoft fan doesn't make you one of Bill Gates' new slaves. It doesn't make you a supporter of capitalism and the Microsoft Monopoly. It doens't mean that just because you are a fan of the X-box, you think the Playstation 2 is rubbish and that the GameCube is just a kiddies toy. It doesn't mean you have super-human sized hands and doesn't mean you're going to be brainwashed by it more and more every time you play your X-box. It doesn't mean you're a PC gamer at heart and it doesn't mean you only consider graphics when buying games. It doesn't necessarily mean that all games on the X-box are going to be of better quality than other console versions just because you're a fan of the more powerful console. It doesn't mean that you hae portable gaming and it doesn't mean the sun shines out of Bill Gates' backside.
The fact is, you've made a decision, whether conciously or sub-conciously to support a certain console which you have preferred playing to the others. Sure, you may have made a decision before playing the others, but chances are you'll still be considering trying them either soon or when their price reduces to something more affordable whilst you're buying games for your choice. Afterall, nobody's forced you to buy that Game Boy Advance, GameCube, X-box or Playstation 2 so what does it matter that a fanboy or just someone who's a little more biased than they should be is making comments to try and tell you you're wrong for playing that console?
It matters nowt. You're not trying to end gaming altogether, you're not trying to pcik fights with anyone, you're not trying to change gaming for the worse - all you're trying to do is have some fun and discuss with others what they prefer.
Sure, every console on the market has it's flaws. If consoles were perfect, would their be any competition and would there be more consoles in the future? There's always going to be someone who disagrees with you and sometimes it's worth listening to their points. But, I am sure you have the intelligence to work out the validity of each point made, and you have the choice to agree or disagree with those opinions. Just make sure it's you whose making the decision on what to buy, and not some complete stranger, not some fanboy and not someone who has completely different tastes to you. Afterall, you may regret spending a couple weeks wages on a games console somebody else thought would be good for you! And enjoy gaming whatever console you decide to choose.

I should've played some patriotic music and saluted as I posted this topic :)
I own and Xbox and I like it and think it's great. I'll play what I want to play and rarely will I pay too much attention to what other people tell me I should be playing-especially over the internet.
Make the choice and do the research for yourself if your buying a console. If you like it that how can you have possibly make the wrong choice?
If i play on my Gamecube well excuse me, its my choice to play the games I want to play. Although GTA3 and Halo are quite good games, i dont feel justified in buying each console just for these games alone. Each to their own, if i want to play original, colourful, fun, atmospheric titles, i think i will stick with Nintendo.
I agree with you totally, but I'm too tired to write too much.
I think I'll go play Monkey Ball.
