When do you play games? When I can, I play whenever I feel like it - whether day or night, I'll play games. Although, due to school/work we can't always play our games when we want. However, when you have got lots of time to yourself, when is the best time of day to play games?

The Bright and the Cheerful
--------------------------------------

Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic Adventure 2, Crash Bandicoot, whatever you think of these games, they are some of the brightest and most colourful games on the market. Sure, they have their moments where things aren't as bright as normal, but chances are these are bright engouh to light a dark room at night whilst also fading the wallpaper or paint on the wall behind you leaving a print of your shadow. These games are much better played on a bright summers day. Why? Because although you could be out there enjoying the sun, chances are it'll be too hot for you anyway, so keep yourself all happy and cheery by playing a lovely bright game which, although isn't too easy, isn't too hard and frustrating either.

Haunt Me...
----------------------

So you've got a version of Resident Evil on your PC or consoles and you want to enjoy them it to the full effect? Well in that case I hope you're not afraid of the dark and silence because that's the best way to play these horror games. They're spooky and atmospheric - well the majority are anyway, and to appreciate them better, you need to be in the quietest room of the house with the best sound quality you can get on loud - as loud as you can tolerate! That way you'll jump when the unexpected happens, and because your lights are off, you wont have any destractions at all to put you off. Make sure it is around 10pm atleast when you start playing, otherwise you'll just get yourself too tired for it to be worth playing.

It's like a warzone out there!
-------------------------------------

So you're a fan of the first-person-shooter, or you like your PC strategy war games. What better time to get bloody and greasy then on a grey and miserable day. The wet atmosphere is perfect for your death-filled hunting of aliens, Nazis and anything else that takes your fancy. Afterall, not all wars were faught in the brilliant sunshine! What about the Chicago alleyways in Perfect Dark? Or how abouts the majority of levels in Doom - they were all in hell and terrible weather just adds to the atmosphere! Why put up with cheap rain-effects when you can have the real thing bashing against your window?

Puzzle Me Dee
--------------------

So you want to play a puzzle game? You're fond of your Tetris and you like your Denki Blocks? Well, puzzle games can be played at any time of the day providing you're ready to have your brain working a little. Just take my advise though - atmosphere is important when playing these games. What you don't want is the annoying 'BLEEP, BLEEP' music that you get from handhelds. If you can, play some of your favourite music on a CD player or something. That way, your brain will relax as well as listen to the rythym of the music. It is proven that music helps you think, and I can assure you that once you get used to it, your scores on Tetris will go through the roof! If you like your sound effects, play CD music as well as keeping the sound on. If you're playing on a console and have the option to, keep sound effects on but turn off ingame music.

Point 'n' Click
----------------------

By the name of the genre - 'Point 'n' Click', chances are you're gonna be playing an old DOS-based adventure on your PC. These all seem to vary in theme, but most of the classics are bright and cartoony. I advise you play these mid afternoon as the sun should be bright and the sky blue and you'll be in a good mood for the classic humour that these adventures give. If they fit into any other catagories as well (e.g. very puzzling, horror, etc) then check out those catagories listed in here first.

Game Boy
---------------

I'm sure you'll well know by now when the best time of day to play your reflective-crystal-displaying handhelds...mid-day in natural light. Or you could alternatively spend a little money on getting yourself an Afterburner backlight, or a removable light of some variety. If you do have some way of seeing in the dark, then playing whilst lying in bed in the morning or night when you can't sleep, or when you've only got five minutes to spare seems to be the best times to play handhelds. IF you've got long adventures like the up and coming "A Link To The Past" for the Game Boy, then sure, play for a bit longer, but most of the time you're likely to be focusing on playing on either a console or PC game.

Sports
----------------

Whether it's wrestling, boxing, football, snooker, tennis, bowling, racing or even martial arts, the best time to play is when you're with your friends, each with a controller and a bottle of something alcoholic, whilst your wife or girlfriend is out with her mother shopping. Ok, I'm assuming you're of legal age to drink and you're male, but you get the picture. If you've got a girlfriend who is really into gaming, then you're so lucky! Anyway, competing with friends is the best way to play sports games, whether you're male or female. Artificial Intelligence can never beat the quality of play of human intelligence, and you can prove, once and for all, you're the best out of the lot of you!

That covers pretty much everything. You've got to be lucky to have all that time convienient to play games though. Most people (like me, usually) will have to put up with playing at whatever times they can, but if you can play in the best case scenarios for each genre, then I strongly advise you do. You'll certainly appreciate the games a little more, and maybe squeeze and ounce or two more drops of enjoyment out of them. When do you prefer to play games?

Wow Uncy Albert, I realize why it isn't always fun playing my games when half way through completion and I think that I have to do it!

You've solved all my future headaches. (:)

Especially in SSBM. Those event modes can drive me loony.

I never once said you had to force yourself to play games at these times. Infact, I've probably only had 5 minutes of gaming against my brother on a single-cart link-up of Sonic Advance on the Game Boy!

I was just suggesting the best times of day for each genre to get the most out of certain games if you wanted to play them.

Sure, if you're bored and you want to play a particular game, then do so. I personally don't play games because I'm bored. I play them because I want to. Sometimes I even get bored of some games myself (though Skies of Arcadia is yet to bore me).

Too right. Now that it's the Summer and I've got loads of time on my hands, I think to myself 'Right, time to complete all these games, which I never got 'round to before'. But forcing yourself to play games as a kind of chore just makes the experience far less enjoyable.
Instead, when you've got nothing better to do, turn to games. You'd be surprised how time-consuming it can be.
