The three big powers of the gaming industry starting with the strongest are:

1) Japan
2) America
3) Europe

Looking at that VERY short statistic, it really shouldn't make sense but it does. Normally, you would expect the greater power of the three, Europe(a continent), to be the more dominant figure, but amazingly Japan (the smallest figure in the stats) and America (who you would expect to be the next best thing after Europe) are the leading forces in the industry.

Firstly, take a look at the gaming giants, Japan. Japan is definitely the acclaimed King of Gaming. The biggest and best of companies are based in Japan, the most popular being Sony, Nintendo and Sega. They all started off in Japan and gradually their products have spread over many different continents making them a wider and larger business in the process.

As soon as someone mentions the word "Japan" the only thing that springs to mind is technological advance and that is why I have upmost respect for them. Most of the main new ideas that have made their way over to the rest of the world have come from Japan like the self-navigating car and especially the self-functioning robots. Even small companies have made their own consoles and handhelds in Japan that we have never heard of over here. That's quite a discouraging thought about Japan that they're keeping other gaming ideas to themselves, but it just goes to show that they really mean business when it comes to technology.

America on the other hand don't really pose a surprise. They seem to evolve around everything these days, but when it comes to gaming they have only one huge source of power ... Microsoft. Bill Gates Microsoft are the most dominant force of computers and while they make enhanced software and hardware they also have the time and better said GUTS to make computer games. Most of the games they make are on the PC, and comparing them to other compnay developed games shows that they're really nothing special when it comes to creating quality PC games. Great games may not come from America, but they certainly arrive there quicker than most parts of the world, straight from Japan. Japan and America seem to have a strong link between them that allows things to be imported to one another more swiftly. Europe however, don't seem to be part of this link, but more of a secondary link as a means of making more profit.

Where did the next-gen consoles first hit? You guessed it, Japan then America and THEN Europe. This just goes to show that Europe may be the best car developers, but in gaming terms they don't produce anything special. Europe may not produce the goods, but it definitely sells them. Most products made by Japan or even America sell on a much larger scale in Europe than in both of these countries. Could this be due to anticiaption? Maybe, but it still doesn't change the fact that the European market scale selling gaming goods is larger than both Japan and America. With this information it is hard to see why we in Europe can't get products much sooner than we already do, rather than months after America and Japan. But it's simple really. The Japanese companies make the games and consoles so should rightly get first serving, and American companies have a strong partnership with them so should obviously get a second serving.

It is pretty frustrating knowing that being in Europe means being last served, but we can't really complain. Most of the primary and secondary developers are based more in Japan and America than in Europe, Konami for example and even they have a base in Europe, but they're primarily based in Japan.

Location matters a lot because it could be the difference between you getting a game now or donkey years later, but there is always the alternative of getting imports which in most cases means you have to learn another language. :-D
