i have been trying to host a forum without paying for the extra mysql or using freeola's own one.
first i tried ikonboard but i had trouble when trying to delete it from my site, it told me i did not have permission to remove some of the files and had to get tech support to do it (it might have something to do with uploading some self extracting files in binary)
i am now trying Navboard which is more basic and quite old but so far has not given me any problems, except when i tried to modify the script and made a mess of it
remember if you do not have the mysql activated then you will need what is called a flat file forum
if you find a good one, post it up

It is really worth getting MySQL. There are so many php scripts that utilize this feature including forums, content systems and many others that the £3 a month really is a drop in the ocean.
Here are the forums I have using SMF (www.simplemachines.org), which uses MySQL all hosted on Freeola of course:

James Woodcock - Freelance Journalist (Over 100 members)
Using MySQL and content systems available, it really makes life simpler creating a website. I can't comment on Freeola's new own forum setup as I haven't used it.
