Some of you may (but in fairness probably wont) remember me mentioning that the sister of one of the people i was friends with many years ago was competing in the gymnastics at the commonwealth games.

I was just watching the news, and to my jaw-dropping amazement she was on it. She was also incredibly good. Now, all that summersaulting, bar-jumping trickery usually impresses me anyway, but even taking that into account, it was... well, jaw dropping.
I think she won a silver medal, and the news woman said she'll probably net at least one gold in the individual events.

In comparison, i'll probably be playing county level pool by the time i can afford a car to get me everywhere, and in the next week should find out if i might be able to get a couple of years of semi-pro basketball. Oh, and i joined a local sunday-league type welsh football team.
Do i sound like a looser? ;O)
And do you feel like one? I do.
Maybe that's just my attitude. Seeing other people being incredibly successful does that to me, especially if i knew them (well, a little bit, not really well) at some time.

I uszed to be a national level gymnast before I gave up. Bumped into an old gym mate of mine (he was actually my events partner) a few weeks ago. He told me that if I had actually carried on instead of giving up (blame the coach, he was a bustard) we both would have been in the England squad by now. Pity really I gave up, but what can you do?

As it happens the beam was one of my best events, along with the Vault and the A-Symetric Bars. The beam is not that difficult to perform moves on it just comes as a natural instinct, by the time I'd been doing it for months I could pull off backflips, front tuck somersaults and finish with a round-off double back somersault dismount.

Anyway, enough of my glory days... I'm off to reminisce over my medal collection (6 golds, 5 silvers, 3 bronze)

Woo yeah. :-)

*RBS' head has swelled* :-)

The gymnastics and the men's 100m are just about the only events I ever sit down and watch during stuff like the Olympics etc. Although it may not be the manliest of things, I'd love to be able to do all that tumbling and backflipping. Could come in handy some day, like if I'm slaying vampires

It used to be the case that trainers would take pre-pubescent girls and stunt their growth so that they remained short and light. Now I' guessing that's illegal, so instead they just train young girls.

I saw the Gymnastics live today, I can't understand how they do it!

They get about 3 meter up in the air just by bouncing about on the floor!

And how the hell do you do a forward flip onto a beam thats just a bit bigger than your feet?!?!?!

WOW!

And also how many of them were under 16!
I saw a 14 year old doing the floor thing today!
I think that's the youngest they are allowed to be if I'm right?
