You can get the actual DVD (legal version, full interactive menus etc. blah, blah, blah, actual box - printed DVD) pretty much the instant the film is released at the cinemas in the U.S.
Unlike your friend who bought an illegal video camera job, you'll find that there are literally tons of places on the net (fair few UK based shops too), that will be able to sell you the Region 0 encoded official DVD before it's official release. How, I here you say? The film makers and people involved in the film's production are all entitled to a free copy, before the DVD is released with it's region lock to whatever part of the country its for, and before it even goes on rental - these people are able to obtain the finished DVD with no region lockout code from the manufacturers. The DVDs get spread about, and you eventually end up with a fair few shops or websites being able to sell you the very same DVDs, several months before release. You'll also find that DVDs from certain areas in the middle-east are subject to the same lack of restrictions. No dodgy picture quality, no people getting up infront of the screen part way through the film, no coughing etc. because its the real McCoy. You'll pay more than £5 for it (nearer actual retail price), but I'd rather pay full whack for a nice, proper DVD in its own box with the extras, animated menus perfect picture quality etc. than buy some dodgy knock off someone has recorded on a camcorder and encoded into DVD format before burning.
Tis how I get a fair number of my DVDs when I can afford to buy a few, I got Jurassic Park 3 when it had only just been released at the U.S. box office.

Well actually that is his super-hero name, and the 'm' in man isn't capital...though you are right about the dash. It is Spider-man.
