One gaming peripheral that is a wacky and almost impossible to produce but still an interesting idea would be a Pain/Reaction Simulator. This may sound rather sadistic but fear not, it would only be, as the name suggests, a simulator. For example, if, in a game, you are shot. Your life goes down, but you don’t stagger or stumble (well, in very few games you do). The Pain simulator would first imitate not the afterwards pain of the shot, but the actual bullet contact pain, using some form of advanced rumbler device. Mix that with the Reaction Simulator, which will make you limp as you walk, and even stop to sit down if needs be, would make shoot em ups and other genre’s more real. I think this would be an interesting (if not dangerous) idea, which could make gaming a lot more interesting. If this idea were ever to be produced, though, I’d assume it would be sooner rather than later, simply because the technology needed for it will probably be obsolete “later” and other devices would probably be created in it’s place, all also much better.
Another idea, which is kind of available already, but not in any great amount or with any good technology levels, is a large(ish) device that lets you do it all. If you’re playing a fighting game, you fight some sort of punch bag/thick stick etc and your moves are created on screen. There are currently things like dance mats and a mini football simulator device but there really are limited. That doesn’t mean they’re a waste, but they’re not really simulators. If the dance mat had many more sensors so you HAD to dance well, or if the football mat had more variation, it would be probably be better. This is one of the few things that could be created sooner or later. Sooner simply because technology would probably allow it (even if it was expensive) or later because the technology used will probably so much cheaper and much more economical to buy.
With so little creativity allowed in existing genres such as beat em’ up etc developers are turning to new genres. Pikmin, a developed ‘sim’ game I guess, then Animal Crossing, a real time communication game and various others, maybe it’s time for a couple of new genres. One of my original ideas was an online game (making it distant future automatically :D) But it was an online genre with a difference. You live in a city. Not a small ‘game’ city but a full size city. And since it’s online, you live with lots of other people. It’s a big ‘The Sims’ game, except you start as a child, and grow up (in speeded time, slowing down when you want to take part). You choose your destiny. Do you want to grow up in slums? The world develops with the characters. You can sell your house and move in to another. You can go shopping. You can die without children or have a family of 8. This isn’t really the Sims I guess because you can go anywhere, like sports facilities and school, without expansions and the like. Plus people can build their own villages, get people to move in, and develop on online world. Well, that’s my dream.
The new genre for this game? Welcome to the first Online Life
Of course, other devices could be made too. It seems in many games you can run for miles as a character and never get tired. How about YOU have to do the walking. If you need items, why are they not supplied with the game, and you can use them live. They’d have numbers on them, updated by the game (and they’d be wireless), so that you know how many you have left. For some games this would be to complicated, but for some this would be superb.
I guess I’m getting at virtual reality with this post. It seems gaming hasn’t really got enough of it. Of course anyone can get involved in the ‘story’ but can you get involved i the actual game. Imagine if you can.
How about some more personalized touches. You can import a photo of yourself to put somewhere in the game. You can even take videos, and play them in the game. What if the game could have sensors so it recognized your room. You picked up a book, you do so in the game as well. Now this is very distant stuff, but I’m quite sure that over time this would be feasible and possible.
Although many gamers do play games as a way of escaping reality, many gamers do not want to escape it, but to restart it. To have another chance, even if it’s really not ‘real’. You never die for good in games, so restarting a game is so much more easier than wanting to erase and rewrite your life. Virtual reality and gaming are both simply places where you can be you and you again until you’ve perfected yourself. And in the world of the future of games, this theory has immense possibilities. Imagine if you could rerun a particularly bad part of your life. You wouldn’t want to escape it, just redo it. That the same as gaming and reality. You don’t want to escape the reality really, you just want to retry and perfect it. It’s all so possible.
Maybe someday these wacky and weird ideas will become reality. Could we one day touch a gaming character on screen on the shoulder, and they turn around? Could we ever be able to place our hand in a waterfall and feel the cool and spray bounce off our fingers? Do you think it’s possible that games will become a true way to rewrite our lives?
The future doesn’t simply hold advancements in gaming. It holds a whole new world. And I sincerely hope that I’m part of it.
Thanks for reading.
