2D games seem to be seen increasingly less than how many there used to be on home consoles. The good old days of the NES, SNES and MegaDrive brought out the best of all 2D games. From the famous 'Jumpman' games to birds eye view RPG's like Zelda, 2D games were making gaming globally acceptable and stamped away it's 'geeky' image.

But nothing lasts forever, as usual, when someone gets a new toy o play with they naturally discard the old one. So 3D started to take over when the days of the N64 and Playstation appeared. From this moment on 2D seemed to disappear; the last 2D N64 game I played was Killer Instinct Gold, it was a beauty of a game but you could see 3D taking over it. From then on, the only 2D games I played were on my Gameboy, most of which were reasonably good.

So, what is the future looking like for 2D? Well at the moment, 3D. All games seem to be taking that leap from 2D to 3D. One that I’m especially sad about is Worms. It was always brilliant, no matter what it looked like. So why is Worms going 3D? to fit into the crowd that want lush looking games with intricately detailed 3D characters. But even more so, to get better sales the 3D change must take place. It seems that many people do judge a book by it's cover. Worms 3D will most probably be amazing, but there was no need for the change.

Maybe Team 17 saw that more and more people wanted 3D on home consoles because they felt they were being tricked. It always happens, people look at a game and think they could be playing that on a handheld, why buy it for a home console? Well, there are plenty of reasons. Firstly the controls, most handhelds have far inferior control systems to that of a home console. Good controls mean that when you play a game the experience can be much better and you won't be fiddling about with dodgy controls. Another simple reason is the size of a TV screen compared to that of a handheld, there's a great difference and usually it's easier to see.

So, is 2D gaming destined for next generation consoles? In some ways, yes, but not straight away, soon enough you won't be able to see a 2D game in sight when you go into a game's shop, because all of the famous 2D games are going 3D. It won't last though. Even though there's 13 dimensions, gaming only uses 2, so 2D will come back soon enough. Maybe watching 3D Worms blowing whatever out of each other may be more enjoyable than 2D fans think. Even though over the past 5 months, 2D on next generation consoles has started to become globally acceptable, sales will make the 3D change soon. Then when people start to get bored of 3D, sales will make 2D come back.

Although there are very few 2D games on the market, like Worms Blast, give it a few years and 2D games will be coming out of your ears!

Thanks for reading

Thats a good post :)

I think developers realise that gamers like the kinda charm of 2D games but like flash visuals. I think thats were Cel Shading came from. It gives nice flash visuals but a cartoony 2D style effect.

Exactly - if it's not broke, don't fix it.

I personally think that Worms in 3d will be dreadful. Its so good because its simpl, now you ave to have an extra trajectory to aim with. It will take many many games to master.

Also, not all games went 3D and did well. Lemmings 3d was atrociuos in my opionion to other games in the seris.

Smash Brothers was a graet 2D game - combining lush state-of-the-art graphics with fast and furious gameplay.

Even then, most 3D games only really make use 2 dimensions.
Final Fantasy, for instance, has barely changed it's gameplay from FF6 to 7. The only real difference was sharper graphics.

I think that the REAL reason that Worms is going 3D is that the 2D versions of the game have more or less saturated what there is to get from this genre.
Hopefully the game's addictive play will remain intact although I wouldn't be too certain.

Team 17 are fantastic and a good 3D worms is possible, but barely...

We'll just see how it comes out.

Damn, I was going to write about the transition between 2D and 3D graphics in a future post, but it looks like you've beaten me to it.

Basically, devlopers have had to put more effort in graphics now that 3D has replaced 2D, leading to more 2D artists being drafted in to help.

As this costs more money than previously before with 2D artists, developer funds are more concentrated on the graphics and not other aspects of a game, such as reserach into new and original features.

Good post, Rick.

I think it was pretty obvious that 2D gaming would go down the pan, because of the limited scopre developers have with them. In 3D worlds, ideas can be more exuberant, original, etc...

Developers can't do as much on a 2D game, I think.

2D gaming brings back a lot of memories for people. I'd have to say that one of the best games I ever played (Donkey Kong) on the old Game Boy was 2D, but it was still a brilliant platformer, which proves that there is nothing wrong with 2D games, and they can be very good if the developer wants them to be.

2D gaming, 3D gaming, it's all the same as long as the developers want to make it the same. 2D gaming won't last for ever, because developers think 3D gaming will sell more, but it's just a case of how it's developed.

Good post Rick.
