Stepping into the boardroom that morning in Nintendo HQ, Shigeru was extremely nervous – a rare thing, considering his position in the games industry. He looked down the lengthy table in the middle of the room and recognised all the leading innovators of the gaming industry. There was Chris and Tim Stamper, of RareWare, Satoru Iwata, head of Nintendo, David Diensteiber of Acclaim…he had respect for all of them. He took his place and looked around tentatively. At the head of the table was ex-president, Hiroshi Yamauchi. He spoke;

“Good evening, gentlemen. I am glad that you are all here. This meeting is top-secret – you will see things that you will not believe. I encourage anyone with weak hearts or dogmatic minds to leave now.”

Silence.

“Very well. I am sure many of you have wondered how I have lived so long – the truth is…I’m a daywalker.” Shigeru gasped. Deinsteiber screamed and hid under the table. Yamauchi laughed…and the laugh was throaty and evil.

“No, just joking, I’m joking! The true reason is actually far more sinister. My own personal R&D department has been working for many years now on forbidden technology, equipment that has yet been unveiled to mankind. My own retirement was necessary to finish this technology. Gentlemen, Nintendo has discovered time-travel.” Shigeru gasped. Deinsteiber screamed and jumped into Chris’ lap. Yamauchi laughed…and his false teeth fell out.

“I present to you, the Game Boy HORROR…logy. Ahem.” From behind him he whipped out a gadget that looked very similar to a classic GameBoy, only about twice as big. “Of course as technology develops we can bring out the GBH pocket, as this version’s a little hefty at the moment. Yes, mister Deinsteiber?”

David dropped his hand, “Is it backlit?”

Yamauchi ran over to him and bit his neck. David dropped to the floor, lifeless. Hiroshi returned to his podium. Shigeru gasped.

“As you will know, the videogames industry is in a critical situation. Companies are ignoring the fact that they are losing profits and are relentlessly pumping the market full of newer consoles and generic games. If this continues then Nintendo could go bust in the next ten years. The GBH has been designed to send one person back in time and alter certain things in history so that the videogames industry does not turn out like it has today. That one person is…Shigeru Miyamoto.”

Shigeru gasped. Hiroshi beckoned him up to the podium. Miyamoto tried not to go but those eyes…they burned into his soul and in his head he heard “come to us, come…” Shigeru left his chair and took a place next to Yamauchi. The former president handed Shigeru a mission sheet. It said this;
PREVENT TOMB-RAIDER
Stop the release of Tomb Raider for the PlayStation however you can. Co-ordinates of Core and Eidos development and publishing houses are listed in your mission pack. Research shows that destroying the first Tomb Raider will prevent the five sequels and movie. It was these factors that bought gaming into the main-stream and tempted thousands of small-time developing companies to start flooding the market with crap games. It will also slow or halt PlayStation’s rapid rise to supremacy.

QUICKEN INVENTION OF DVDs
Introduce DVD technology far earlier that it was previously discovered. A specially designed parcel is included in your mission pack. Deliver this to the given co-ordinates near the end of 1995. This way DreamCast, and possibly Nintendo 64, can utilise the power of DVDs, giving the two consoles a major advantage over the PlayStation. This advantage could even the competition between Sony, SEGA and Nintendo, thus preventing SEGA from quitting the console industry and stopping third-parties flooding to one console, creating an even balance.

SAVE GUNPEI YOKOI
This is the most critical mission of all. Travel back in time and prevent Gunpei from being hit by a passing car. Prolonging Gunpei’s life will provide unknown wonders for the company and hopefully help Nintendo survive in the future.

Shigeru finished reading the mission brief and looked up at Yamauchi. Shigeru felt cold, and his face was wet with perspiration. Hiroshi booted up the GBH and set it on the floor. It went ‘Bling!’ and a pale blue beam of light shot out of the monitor. Shigeru picked up his mission pack, and, with a final glance at the people around the desk, stepped into the portal…
