Still all the time on TV you see them advertise as bbc.co.uk so why spend $600,000 or whatever on a diferent version of the advertised name??? If they hadn't and you went to bbc.com you'd probably notice it wasn't the BBC you were after, lol.

Most companies with business-critical websites will lease servers from a provider so that they can guarantee practically 100% up-time to their customers via Service Level Agreements.
Remember at the end of '99? business.com sold for $7.5m!!!

Weird how they do that, obviously they must be the first people to think of the name, why spend so much buying it? then again, those domains are some of the most clicked on around the globe, the bbc is aparently the most clicked on url in the UK so it's not like moneys a thing and not needed.

I also hear that Sky and/or the BBC paid a six figure sum for the .com versions of their name.
I'm under the impression that Big Corps host their own Servers, or lease server from host compatnies, like fasthosts and easily let you buy/lease your own Servers do to as you want with them and they will maintain them.
Is that just for the name or does it include hosting?
I've always wondered about big websites, do they buy their own fleet of servers like the BBC and...SR? or do they just buy the domain and stick it on Supanames or something...

An english internet bank that I worked on (that shall remain nameless) paided £250k for their domain name. That's what corporate identity costs these days. Nuts eh?
