Instead of writing the complimentary page long speech about the topic, I have decided to just state a question.

What is your favourite plot in a game, why was it good, and do you think the plot is the most important part of the game?

I know that was more than one question, before you say.

(I wasn't going to say anything.)

Good.

Without a shadow of a doubt it has to be Metal Gear Solid. The main reasons why I think it is so brilliant is all the twists in the plot, the numerous backstabbings by the colonel, the whole keycard thing and the strong anti-war message. I think that although MGS is a great game in itsel, if you skip the dialog and don't follow the plot you are cheating yourself of an excellent and integral part of the game.

And that's my 2 penn'orth.

Despite finding the game very playable, the plot of Metal Gear Solid didn't really draw me in. For plot that involves you I guess it would have to be the original Alone in the Dark, which had a good old fasioned ghost story feel to it, or Ecstatica (which I unfortunately don't have anymore) which was just plain weird, but was one of the first plots to move with the game. Besides, the characters in Ecstatica were brilliantly bizarre and some were genuinely scary.

Obviously Half-Life gets a mention for a well put-together plot, but it didn't seem as original as the other two I mentioned.

A well told story doesn't have to be original to captivate the audience...

True, just look at all the costume dramas on TV, but it does add something to certain types of games. I just prefer the other two games I mentioned, plotwise.

I think one of the best game plots is Metal Gear Solid. I must admit, I don't enjoy sitting through hours of internal dialogue, but if you do stop and listen you will find a strong, meaninful, engrossing and believable plot.

Oh yeah, MGS has the best plot ever. It kept me on the edge of my seat, I had no idea what was going to happen next, as darkness put above, its engrossing, believable, meaningful, strong and overall brilliant!!!
