--Long version--

This evening i thought i'd go see if the campus bar was quiet (it's always either dead or pretty crowded, depending on whether there are many conference groups staying at the time), and relax, shooting a bit of pool on my own (my shot had been a bit wayward recently).

There was one group in, and the table was free, so after chatting to the guy i know behind the bar for a bit, we went for a game (there wasn't really anything for him to do anyway...). Later a couple more people arrived, so he went to serve them, and some other bloke wanted a game. I kept playing for a bit (winner stays on), and was shortly up against an american guy on a holiday/conference group. He didn't seem happy with the pub cue, and having talked to him a bit, and seen his manner at the table, i trusted him to offer to let him use mine (best to make sure it's nobody who might varelessly brake it, or give you trouble about replacing it if a genuine accident does happen).
He rolled it on the table to check how straight it was, then declined, and kept hold of the pub's cue. Curious, i was checking the straightness myself, and to my complete shock, it was pretty severely bent.

Well... it'd.. explain the problems with my shot.. they've only been there for the past couple of weeks, must have happened around then.
And i'm sure it looked like some fat bint was sitting on the case a while ago...
But i can't belive i didn't notice...

Being skint, and having, ironicly enough, just spent enough money to replace the cue on buying a nice quality solid case (to replace my soft case) to protect the cue from damage, money will be a problem if i'm going to replace it with a nice quality cue.

But it's more than that...

Found out my pool cue is bent. Sad to have to see the back of it...

I've had the cue for about 3 or 4 years, we've had some good times. Lots of them. Once, someone asked me if i had a name for it. In a moment of (sort of) inspiration i jokingly replied 'michael caine'. The name stuck. Thus it's not just a good cue i've lost, it's a companion for the good times, and one i'd named.

But it's still just a piece of wood. With a bit of cork stuff on the end.

So am i just being a muppet? Is it just a shame to be losing something that reminds me of the good times, or do i actually care for my cue on a level beyond it being expensive and having got used to it?

And would that make me a muppet?

I'm pretty sure i am a muppet.. but i'll still be saddened to consign him to the back of an old cupboard.

I have a league match on thursday. Nuts. I have to replace it tomorrow or play with pub / borrowed cue. Nuts.
Bah, can't rush these things. I'll look around tomorrow, and if i don't find anything just right (it took me ages to find michael), i'll leave it until i go to chester for a week. Better chance to get a good one then.

*Mental not, don't call the next one twiggy :OS

Anyway, does caring about my piece of wood make me a muppet?
