The reason people stay behind until after credits is that generally there's a reward. A scene you wouldn't otherwise see if you'd left earlier.

Samuel L. Jackson makes a cameo as Nick Fury, a character you might not know about, but is integral to the mythos of the comic.

For the comic geeks, it's freaking cool, for the non-comic geeks, it's a hint as to what's coming next from superhero movies. ^^
