Perhaps we're going to see the same thing happening in videogames that happened in the art world. Up until the end of the 19th century artists strove to make artwork that was more and more realistic - realism was the ultimate goal of many painters and sculptors. But once they eventually achieved this in the end of the 19th century then there was nowhere to go and more abstract/non-realistic art started to appear.
Now that videogames have achieved a high degree of realism, perhaps there is nowhere else to go for many games designers who want to achieve something a bit different. Perhaps more and more games will start to have less realistic graphics, concentrating instead on other ideas. Who knows...perhaps we'll see Abstract or Surrealist graphics appearing in videogames in the future!
