Alright, let's think about this. The PlayStation 2 was released last month. Why on earth would they be planning the PlayStation 3 already? Well, let me drop the ball while I still can. The PlayStation 3 isn't anywhere near completion. We're talking about a 2005 release. I don't even know what I'm doing next week, let alone 2005! Why would Sony release info this early? They didn't. Then why should we believe that this information is reliable? Because it came from Sony. Confused? Let's dig deeper.
There is a rather popular university lecturer in Japan named Kouichi Okao. So? So he's the guy who knows all about the PlayStation 3? How? Well it seems that an employee of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) entrusted him with the info. And like any true gamer would do, he told a popular gaming magazine all about it. This man is my hero.
SCE should be a bit pŁ$*%d off now because of this. However, they're already a bit pŁ$*%d that they lost the battle to Sony about the PlayStation 2. Know how the PlayStation 2 is quite expensive? Well, SCE didn't want that. SCE wanted to make a cheaper and simpler gaming machine out of the PlayStation 2. Sony, being the large corporation that they are, wanted a set-top box which could do much more than just play games. With the PlayStation 3, there won't be any more arguments between SCE and Sony on which is better. The only argument that should be going on is between you and your parents/significant other on how much cash you can have.
So what does Sony, king of the cash, want to do with their PlayStation 3? Quite a bit. Using the Japanese Digital Broadcast technology, you'll be able to record TV shows to a built-in Hard Drive. Sure, it's five years away, but I already know what PS3 I'm saving up for! By using NTT's ISDN lines, you'll be able to access the internet. One of the things that you can do is access pages about TV shows, and from there, you can set your PS3 to automatcially record that show. Wacky. DVD playback is also a feature. This beast of a machine better be able to play games. They better not forget that aspect of the PlayStation!
Sony wants to blow the rich people away with that one, but what does the more modest SCE want to do with their PS3? Not much. At all. We're talking about the ability to play games and DVDs. That's it. They're going to get rid of the USB and other ports from the PS2 that they argued against at first. This will, however, cut the cost of the system by half, which could be quite attractive for children without dough. You'll only have to cough up 20,000 yen (somewhere around $200 US) for this baby.
So which one is the best for you? Well, if you're a gaming fanatic, you'll probably want Sony's machine. Unless you're so much of a fanatic that you don't watch ANY TV. Then you could pick up SCE's machine and a few more games. Children and casual gamers will appreciate the low price of SCE's machine. Keep in mind that they'll both perform the same. Sony's machine will just have a lot more aspects of play to it. What do I recommend? Definitely Sony's machine. It sounds all too incredible. And yet it's five years away.
My advice is to not think too much about it. The PlayStation 2 is coming to North America this fall, and it's a machine for the present. In five years, we'll be able to experience the next machine to fall from the heavens.
PS3? oh c,mon PS2 is only just coming out, anyway the PS2 is supposedly "Future proof" which means as the gaming industries get more advanced Sony can upgrade it's Next Generaton Console. i dont know if this is true but i read it in some PS mags.
We'll just see what the gaming situation is like in 5 years time!
