Smelly gaming - In game produced smells
A while back I read and article about a new peripheral which mixes chemicals together to create commonly used smells you would expect from gaming. The likes of burning rubber, blood, sweat and rotting flesh. The kind of addition to take gaming one step further. Imagine playing a game and your character finds a smelly kipper, your room would stink for weeks, or enter a bread shop and get that wonderful smell of fresh bread mmmm. There are though a number of issuse that bother me a little, firstly the cost. Not just the cost to buy it which could be high but also the cost to buy chemical packs for it. Also are the chemicals used safe and what precausions are taken to avoid the peripheral being damaged and harmful to the owner? There is also an issue about developers making it useful as it is totally useless unless developers include the code to operate it during the game, also it will obviously only be beneficial to certain types of games. I think this is a borderline idea in that it could be quite good and work well or be a complete flop and die out in a similar way to the Sega Saturn. :-)
Imagine smelling a zombie before walking round the corner to see it. Smelling a fart in a crowded room and shooting whoever it was. Just hope the idea behind it works.

The biggest changes we will see in gaming within the forseeable future is the ability to detect motion and use voice as input.
Both have an enormous potential to make gaming a much better experience. The ideas are very simple but hard to implement, voice recognition is using your voice as an input, the console would have to understand natural language and also all dialects which is a very hard and difficult thing to do. It is something I feel could work well in a number of genres and may well be a big step forward for gaming if and when it happens.
Socom is a new game for the PS2 bundled with a USB headset which allows you to communicate with other players in multiplayer mode and give commands in single player. A nice idea, just hope it is as playable and used as well as intended and as planned. This is one of the ones I hope gets implemented properly and also soon. Sounds great to me.

Motion recognition is what it sounds like, being able to detect the movement, be it you as the gamer or a peripheral such as a light sabre, sword or other weapon. Not only could it make the game more fun but it also changes the way we would interact with the game. Simialr in a way to the Police 24/7 arcade game which you have to physically move to avoid bullets we could see a similar thing used to make fighting and FPS's a lot more playable and fun. Sony are releasing a whole bundle of games which make use of there new "Eyetoy" peripheral. Like a webcam it puts 'you' in the game and looks very clever. It is only starting off so its likely to be poor at first but given time and more effort in its development it could prove to be a worthwhile addition to games in the future.

Facial recognition
Changing the face of gaming, exactly what this is. Well it is simple, technology is reaching the standard where it is becomming possible to analyse someones facial properties and recreate them in the
virtual world. The technology has a bit to go before it will be in mainstream use but it could be quite beneficial to the gaming industry. Imagine playing a game where you actually look like the character or
adding your mates to a game and having a multiplayer battle where you actually feel more part of it. I think it does seem like a good idea but I can also see the downsides - peoples negative views. People saying
that violent games where the person you are beating is someone you know can be more serious mentally than fighting an unknown character etc. Surely if the game is violent and unsuitable then it will be given the appropriate rating and if the parents don't like it then don't let your kids play it. Simple.

Attention to detail.
One thing I think we will see more and more of is the ability to side track your self a little from the main game by the amount of detail there is in the level. Making every object interactable and allow you to do what you want when you want. Not just the detail of the level and characters but making things behave the way they should and allowing the character to use them to the best of their ability. Shooting through doors, throwing boxes, rocks etc to knock the enemy down, I guess it is just the way games should progress and evolve into better games and I would be shocked if this kind of issue was ignored. Its simple, game will always get better. For the future we can predict that they can always get better, technology will always allow this. But these are some of the big things we should see next. Well hopefully. Fingers crossed.

Fear
There has been an increase on the number of games aimed to scare and cause an element of fear within the game. Probably due to the fact that now consoles are advanced enough to support it but also because
society allows it. Resident evil was probably one of the first (Shadow of the beast on the Amiga maybe started it). Anyway, I feel that the scarey games aren't really producing the element of fear required, there
are a lot of so called horror films that well to be honest are pants and sadly games follow this. In my view fear of the unknown is much better than a fear of knowing what to expect. Fear of the unexpected and not knowing what is comming is something which needs to be improved, this is what adds to the errie atmoshpehere and make you jump out your seat or leave a small surprise in your pants you scardey cats!! :-). No doubt the likes of Resident evil and silent hill will continue to improve and get better and increase the fear factor.

Adult themes. Gaming is now being accepted as no longer kids only, we have 18 certificate games like GTA3 which are packed with violence and gore. So why not other adult themes? I don't mean 100% pornography style games but maybe there is a market out there for more adult themed games, with todays graphics and gameplay there could be quite a number of possible titles and styles of games. Not just violent, gorey, scarey horror games but also games that include sex, nudity, drugs etc. (Ok so GTA3 has a brief encounter with some of this, but not in a more adult way that it could)
To be honest I am surprised there haven't been more of these already. We could have console versions of strip poker, strip club manager etc. More boobs are required in games :-)
