I was looking at some of my World Cup magazines last night. Before the World Cup, bookies and papers and magazines were being ignorant about some teams, and praising others to bits, but nothing they really said seemed to happen. Here's stuff taken out of 3 World Cup Special magazines I got.

They said: "Brazil - Out at the 2nd round to the accompaniement of horrified punditry."
What happened: You know what happened. :D

They said: "Expect an Argentina vs France final. Go on, you know we're right. Also expect Portugal vs Italy as the 3rd place play-off!"
What happened: None of those teams got past the quarters.

They said: "Slovenia - A heart breaking exit at the quarters, after making lots of friends."
What happened: Slovenia did crap all.

They said: "Turkey - no further than the 2nd round."
What happened: Who got the 3rd place?

They said: "Group D - Portugal and Poland shall go through easily. USA's exit at the group stages will be largely ignored back home, and when Korea go out, at least they won't have far to go home."
What happened: Absolutely nothing they said.

They said: "Argentina - All the way to the final, and possibly more."
What happened: *Sniggers*

They said: "Mexico - Home after the group stage."
What happened: Well, they did only get to the 2nd round, but is that any way to talk about the team rated 6th in the World?

They said: "Belgium - if they're lucky, they'll scrape through after 2 boring 0-0 draws and a flukey 1-0."
What happened: Belgium scored 6 goals, and let in 5, which was a little more than expected from these chaps.

They said: "Belgium vs Russia - 1/5 rating."
What happened: Well, the ONLY game that got a one star rating out of 5, and it was a game that ended up finishing 3-2 to Belgium. Fools.

They said: "Despite Ronaldo being back on form and fully fit, he has no chance for the Golden Boot. Expect Vieri, Crespo, Raul or Trezeguet on that one."
What happened: Ronaldo won, with the rest of them scoring half the amount of goals he did.

Well, the World Cup was flukey, but these fools totally underestimated what could happen, and went for the more powerful side, every time. Some people....

They said it'd be a World Cup just like any other....
BOY how they were wrong!!

England were also over-hyped to go all the way too!

In my opinion some of the big teams got complacent. They expected to win and did not respect the smaller teams enough, such as Senegal and South Korea.

I think it's also fair to say that there is now a lot more strength in depth in the world of football. The performances of the top teams were not up to recent standards but there are now a lot more countries who have the strength to challenge in these tournaments.

There are very few teams in the World Cup and Euro Championships who are a push over so shocks will happen. There is no longer such a huge gap between the best and the rest.
