LOL
ROFL
LMAO
etc...
Are all well and good...
Though I seem to remember that before mobiles took off, net speak was progressing, from smilies, to abbreviations, to asterix text (*smiles*, *hides under the covers*), and beyond...
Then mobile phones took off, txtrs somehow got the impression that they invented netspk, and everything reverted back to its pre-'93 state...
Its this happy rut we can still find it living in today...
To be fair, txtspk provides more than a simplified written communication media for button restricted mobiles, hand in hand with the ever present brain frying radiation, it aids limited language development, underdeveloped imagination, and the opportunity to type complete crap into a phone, pretend it says something, and then get charged 50p for the opportunity
To this I say No!, we have alcohol, cultural apathy and institutionalised mediocrity to do these things for us (apart from that last one)...
We seem to be missing a golden opportunity to become cartoon/comic strip characters...
Instead of lol, why not chortle?
Instead of lmao, why not guffaw?
If nothing else it provides the opportunity to hit other people repeated over the head with a frying pan? Erase someone’s face with a cheese grater?
... Although I think any and all Carry-On movie noises should also be included???
