Pokemon.

Marmite.

PlayStation2.

Love it or hate it, there will always be fanboys. Nobody could predict the phenomenon that Pokemon became and nobody can predict the future of Pokemon. Will we get rehashed top down random drivel or compelling 3D GameCube adventure?

Pokemon is a classic example of what I call 'cashing in'. The name explains itself. Pokemon was at the start, a great, deep and refreshing game, which gave an absolutely brilliant portable role-playing adventure. However, as with many other things, Nintendo caught onto the popularity. Now we're left with Pokemon Johto (the cartoon), Pokemon Cards, Pokemon Tazo's, Innumerable numbers of spinoff figurines, posters and merchandise and of course the obligatory 'take a break from Pokemon catching to do something totally unrelated' spinoff games. Sickening.

This is kind of where Nintendo created the Pokemon backlash that has occured. I think for every 2 Pokemon fans, there is a Pokemon hater. I used to think I hated Pokemon, but after playing Gold and Silver I revoked that. Pokemon games are brilliant, but people will not buy them because Nintendo has cashed in a bit too much.

Lets look forward to the future. As such, very little has been shown of future Pokemon games, bar the ridiculously old hat screenshots which could as well be somebody playing around with the terrain given in Pokemon G/S. Pokemon's future is idle - they've only recently appeared in other games. Smash Brothers. Pokemon Stadium. Pokemon Snap. Pokemon has built its fan base among GameBoy owners for what it is - catching, raising and trading. This is what Pokemon excells at. Yet Nintendo are trying to put Pokemon in places where they needn't be. I mean, in Pokemon Snap, the whole raising/trading aspect disappears which makes for a very mediocre game.

I look forward to the future of Pokemon as it should be, a future similar to Zelda. Pokemon on GameCube. Zelda on GameCube. Pokemon on the GameBoy Advance. Zelda on the GameBoy Advance. Link up options. I'd love nothing more than playing a straight conversion (gameplay wise) of Pokemon Red/Blue on the GameCube in proper 3D graphics. As long as I don't have to spend time squinting at the GameBoy screen.

Pokemon really does need to stop becoming such a franchise. If they just stick to the games, not the merchandise, I'm sure all those fanboys will soon lose their anti-ness. Nintendo built their reputation on innovation, not piles of cash. And I think if they can make Pokemon as reputable as the Zelda and Mario series, I'm sure the future will be very bright. Otherwise, look forward to Pokemon Pink and Purple, Black and White and wood and earth. Grrr... I know which 'future' I'd prefer.
