When you think about it, the success of one game can not only have a great effect on the future of the games' developers, the console it's on, and the series itself, but also on the main characters you notice after you've experienced that 'sheer piece of brilliance'.

The games where the characters really jump-out at and amaze you have usually been worked on for months on end, through night and day, with innovative ideas - like the classic Platformers of Mario and Sonic we've seen from over the years. If these games where never as good as they started, then we'd just know Sonic as 'some blue spikey thing', while Mario would be 'a boring old fay guy with a 'tache'.
If these series' (and others) hadn't started so well then they wouldn't be as good as they are today. And it's thanks to the likes of Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that we really do know who these characters are, a lot better than the 'faceless mascots' we'd otherwise see them as.

Big games and big gaming series' help to make the big names even bigger.
One great game can also help to benefit other characters too - and not just the like of Link or Mario who end-up saving the Princess for the umpteenth time.

Super Smash Bros. Melée on the GameCube is a classic example of a game that sends the reputations of the unknown sky-high as they rocket off into outer-space.
When you first put the game into the Cube, you first characters you look to play as are instantly going to be Mario, Link, Pikachu, Bowser, DK, or maybe another hero or villain who has since made his mark in a game of the past.
But when you see a name like Captain Falcon from F-Zero or Ness from Earthbound, you become slightly confused.
You don't know who these guys are. Simply because you haven't played any of the games they've featured in, and therefore you find yourself up against the unknown when you come to face these guys in the later-stages of a tournament. Unless of course you play as them.

When you play as one of the unknown, you may find-out that they actually have a lot more to offer than you would have ever expected!
Who'd have guessed that a man who can race at incredible speeds can also pack a punch or two out in the fighting ring!
And what about those little guys who look like harmless Eskimos??
They may look cute and cuddly, but with a nasty hammer and a good-'ol bit of teamwork, you may-well soon find-yourself flying off the screen in seconds.

If all goes much better than expected when playing as someone you don't know, then you may soon have yourself a new favourite character you like playing as!

This has happened to me in this same game - and not just with one player.
The only thing I knew about Samus Aran was that it was the star from some SNES Side-Scroller known as Super Metroid.
I then went-on to pick-up and play as this character and I discovered so much more! Not only did I find out the robot was actually a women inside a suit, but the moves you can do with her are brilliant!
I later came to unlock a man named Marth, who again, I didn't have the foggiest about. I later found out he was from some game called Fire Emblen, and that he is one heck of a swordsman to play with!
He's knocked Link right off the top in this game - and I can't wait for a possible future release of Fire Emblen on the GameCube!!

There are a few other characters in a few other games too, but the effect is still the same. Even if it's a villain like Wario from Super Mario Land 2 going into his own game, I still fell I HAVE to have it.

And that's another point I want to make - a great little character in an excellent game can turn your attention straight to his future starring roles, games that you'll really fork-out for.

If characters were lame in a massive game then you wouldn't expect to see his future sales going-far.
Characters like Mario, Sonic and Link have seen their games shoot-to-the-top due to the fact that we, as gamers, love to play as characters like theirselves, due to the large number of things you can do with them!
If they ever hit a bad patch or if their developers run-out of ideas, then it could be game over for the Italian-born Brooklyn Plumber and co.

Luigi's first adventure wasn't all that great, and so we won't be looking forward to too many of his future starring roles. (if he ever has any!)
I now look forward to playing as any new character in ANY new game. :)

Blinx could be a great new character, on the wrong format.
He's apparently been designed by the guy who came-up with Sonic, and he can use his vacum to move through time and stuff.

Wether that's the SEGA Sonic or the original Animé character he also designed I don't know.

Strange how it only ever seems to be Nintendo and SEGA coming up with the best characters.... and Rare with Conker!

Guys like Crash and Solid Snake just aren't the same!

That's what I LOVE about Nintendo - their characters are so likeable.
They're not realistic - they're just designed to appeal, and it certainly works on-a me!

At one point I thought about buying every Mario game on the market, just to collect games that he starred in, but that, I thought, was going too far, so I dropped the momentary adrenaline-induced thought.

That's what I love about videogames: the more crackpot the character, the more popular they seem to be.
-A blue super-fast hedgehog in red trainers.
-A chubby Italian plumber with magic abilities.
-etc.
I always enjoy playing games which are fronted by a brand new character.
I can't wait to play BLINX - the so-called "mascot" character of the XBOX.
Will he become as well-known as Sonic and Mario...? Only time will tell.
