Now most of you will know about Jason Read. He has set up “Jase Camp” outside a store on Oxford Street and is “queuing for Turok”. His attempt to que for 50 days is a constant thorn in the side of respectability. Every day of his vigil that passes allow the wound to fester and grow, to become filled with putrid puss and the weeping of sores dribble out a message: his one-man freak show is a condemnation of us all. Why? Because he is affirming every uninformed person’s opinion; that people who play computer games are sad, lonely, pathetic individuals, very often social outcasts and ugly. Obviously we all know that this isn’t the case, some of us are very ugly!

Seriously though, just as gaming is becoming socially acceptable, some idiot does his best to allow others to denigrate it. As I have said before, most people own a games console or a PC and walking into any game shop will demonstrate the diversity of people playing games. The games industry is growing in respectability (there are now BAFTA award categories for games etc) and the amount of money it generates is guaranteed to attract recognition.

He is not the only one who causes our brethren to wail and gnash our teeth. Many are the geek and mild and they cling to our past time like sycophantic leeches to a succulent pig. The attraction that an on screen avatar holds for them is strong, which is fair enough. Gaming is a fantasy and is a great form of escapism.

However there is little to be gained from an obsession with this virtual world and many people soon become ridiculously imbued with the notion that they can “prove a point” through this portal. How many on-line games have cheats spoiled? How many times have you read a post on a gaming forum and just thought: idiot! Why do people defend their favourite computer games or consoles with so much fervour and vitriol? Because they think an attack on their console is an attack on them. They have lost all sense of reality and are using games to justify their position in an erroneous social circle, having already been detached from society in the real world.

Their avatar shall be known as Jason Read.

For he has a tent.

And no idea.

We should not mock this man any further, we should take action and the solution is simple:

freeze him in carbonite and put a sign on his sarcophagus: waiting for evolution, please do not disturb.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
