But I have one major worry, all these online multiplayer games that are coming out, what about single player games? I mean yes, Online gaming sounds really good, but I still love to play single player games such as Oddworld and Spiderman.
Single player games give you a sense of achievement when you defeat a boss or complete a level, I love a single player game, and they break you away from the world for an hour or two.
With all of these multiplayer games coming out, are single player games dieing?
Take Unreal Championship for example - Its really just a multiplayer game, with a few single player options such as adding bots.
Mech Assault - A Great looking mech game portrayed as multiplayer as well.
The media expresses the multiplayer area of the games, but dismisses the single player option, as if to put it aside like no one wants it.
I do like the idea of online gaming, but sometimes I like to play a single player game, a break from the multiplayer experience.
I do believe many games are coming out are single player, its just media propaganda portraying these games as multiplayer-only.
I just hope developers don't let single player games die.
Ok, multiplayer games are very good fun. Super Smash Bros melee wouldn't have been so popular as it has been on the GameCube if the console only had two controllers and had a small multiplayer mode. It had so much you could unlock for the multiplayer modes whilst the single player mode seemed repetative and hardly varied from play to play. Infact, playing multiplayer games allows you to compete against your friends and allows you to actually have a social life whilst gaming.
Online multiplayer games are a different matter though. Playing an online game is just as social as waiting in the queue of Anne Summers. Sure, you're around people but you're very unlikely to get to know them! You're connectHowever, online gaming offers you the chance to play against many more people than multiplayer gaming on one TV. This does not necessarily make it more fun.
The truth is, unless the majority of gamers get high-speed cheap internet connections, online gaming will not be stable forever. Look what's happened to the online Dreamcast games - Many you cannot play now because the console's shelf life is over. The servers have been shut down and you are forced to use your own ISPs because SEGA have decided to stop their own services.
Providing you've got a TV, single player gaming will last as long as you want it to. You don't rely on signals from an aerial or from a telephone wire, you don't rely on others being willing to play against you, and you can play at your own level and/or play again and again as many times as you like.
It doesn't matter what console you use - online gaming is coming whether you like it or not. However, developers know that games sell more when they have a decent single player mode. Getting a balance between single and multiplayer is great, as Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64 showed us, but games switching entirely to multiplayer will not be successful in the near future. The closest we'll see to successful almost-purely multiplayer games are the ones like Turok Rage Wars and Unreal Touranment.
that's like when PC games went online. people who didn't have the internet could still play their game by themself. it's like sying, "if you don't have the internet, you can't play our games" etc :-S
