After a hard day at school or even at work, we all have our ways of releasing stress. Some people use stress relief remedies or the good old' stress ball, but known scientists think that computer games may be the best way.

According to some of the boffins, if we shoot guns on computer games, we can reduce the chances of using a gun for real.
If we kill someone on a game, it will become less likely for us to go out and start a mass murder.

Seems quite strange? Does this mean also that if we win the World Cup on a game it will stop us from wanting England to win the World Cup? Probably not. But one thing that has been proved to benefit us is the way games calm us down. It has been proved to relax the mind and put the gamer in a state of Karma.

So how can games have such a great affect? Well, one way a gaming session can relieve stress is by helping the gamer to forget all their worries. While they are emerged in a gaming world all their emotions suddenly change depending on the game. For example, an angry stressed out person can become jubilant and happy after a Pro Evolution session. Or a worried gamer could become relaxed while playing ico.

So is it that games which contains allot of violence can help you release stress? If so, do you think that the age restrictions to some of these games will be dropped? Will the gaming world be used in hospitals where patients cannot control their anger?

Some types of Computer violence will always be unacceptable...
The hooligans game on the PC for example is one type of violence that should never been seen as acceptable. Encouraging the player to go round and smash up pubs and rival football supporters is a bit different from killing space aliens with a plasma rifle or other made up weapons.

Are some games companies restricting violence in games too much? Take a look at Nintendo's systems. The majority of violence is in the third-party games such as Turok and The World is Not Enough, however, on the Playstation 2 there is a wider variety of violent games on the Sony system such as State Of Emergency, GTA3 and Quake 3. State OF Emergency for example has to be one of the sickest games on the market. Your mission is to mame, kill and generally destroy as many corporation members as possible, while wreaking havoc around a city.

There, that was my view on violence in games, there's a wide choice of games available, which means we don't have to buy the most violent games if we don't want to. It's just that the majority of gamers seem to like the more bloody games and that's why they get publicized more.

Depends whether the game contains anything else apart from violence...like playability and the fun factor it has, though "fun" will ultimately come down to who plays it.

GTA3 gives players a choice as to how much violence they use, and it's kind of made acceptable due to the fact that the player is attacking other criminals / gangs, none of the missions say straight out, kill pedestrians, as a main objective.

SOE was different as it was/is a poor game compared to GTA3 with little content and not much variety of gameplay, it was basically piggybacking on the success of GTA3 which explains why Rockstar released it before any magazines reviewed it.

Hooligans: Storm Over Europe, was a great example of how low the industry can sink too - yet also who can blame the pubishers when the public bought it ? , it quickly gained a notorious reputation which sent sales soaring. Rival gangs clash and kill/maim/destroy everyting in their path.... yet it sold tons in England so do we consider this fun ?

Nintendo are proving with game after game, that you can have a lot more fun in a game without massive violence. Games such as GTA3 get repetitive and boring after a while...sure Super Smash Bros Mellee is fighting but in cartoon style.

The Playstation 2, and Sony, are gaining a reputation as the violent/mature games platform, the problem I see is that its not necessarily going to attract the gamers Sony need for continued long term success - the older people who actually buy games regularly and not just at Xmas and Birthdays, and how many parents are going to buy the console at Xmas for kids if all they see on the shelves are 18 + 15 rated games ?

At the end of the day its personal choice a to whether you like it - if you don't then accept others do, but how long before games go even more extreme ? And how will that damage the industry overall, at least for Sony....
