More and more cel-shading seems to be appearing these days. It made me wonder what will be happening now that graphics in games are pretty much as realistic as they are going to get.

Perhaps we're going to see the same thing happening in videogames that happened in the art world. Up until the end of the 19th century artists strove to make artwork that was more and more realistic - realism was the ultimate goal of many painters and sculptors. But once they eventually achieved this in the end of the 19th century then there was nowhere to go and more abstract/non-realistic art started to appear.

Now that videogames have achieved a high degree of realism, perhaps there is nowhere else to go for many games designers who want to achieve something a bit different. Perhaps more and more games will start to have less realistic graphics, concetrating instead on other ideas. Who knows...perhaps we'll see Abstract or Surrealist graphics appearing.....just as we have in the art world!

I think a game with graphics based around Pop Art from someone like Andy Warhol would look pretty cool. And games designers can always look towards a style of art for inspiration and ideas. Just look at Surrealism and work from the likes of Salvador Dalí - imagine how wierd and wonderfull games could've looked if he was someone like Shigsy...

Still, if it means develpoers using realism where appropriate, but increasingly turning to other options where they may be more appropriate (like shigsy with zelda), then surely by definition that's a good thing.

Well, if it really is 'appropriate' for them to use it, instead of a cheap way out.

But i think as data capacities increase, we'll soon see photographed images (of real surfaces/things) being used more and more within the games, giving a new direction for developing realism.
That and throwing more polygons around, of course : )

Oh, and great topic, always nice to see a new angle or idea in a thread.
