My lady gets Heat mag, and every week this woman is in there, and the nation of heat readers wait with baited breath to see what she is going to wear next. Trust me, she wears some real nasty stuff, yet she is represented as this style guru.
And that's where the point of this is going. People are influenced to buy products that celebs that they like advertise, regardless of the quality of the product. There are stacks of games on the shelves that are endorsed by celebs. Tony Hawks is one of the best examples. The Pro Skater is one of the best games on the PS2, and is now on every other system too.
But for every Hawkes there is a Beckham. The cross-dressing transvestite has a game also, and it's pants. Yet, because of the celebrity endorsement copies are selling out.
Or is it the punters that are selling out? People are reading the magazines, right? Every mag has said that this game is cheddar, but copies are still selling. And it's not the only one. The Fifa game was number 1 in the sales chart even though we all know that the Pro Evo game is the best.
Could it be that the parents are buying the games? Could it be that the kids are buying the games having saved all the money they would have spent on the magazines, sacrificing the valuable gaming advice they supply? Or are they really buying the product because of the celeb on the cover?
The trouble is, is that for whatever reason these games are selling, the games makers knows that if they get some celeb on the box, they will sell more. Would Gran Turismo have been the game it is if it wernt for the cars? The theory works, but it is abused.
We need to let the developers know that they cannot pull the celeb card to sell games. How? but only buying games that are good. For the kids who buy games instead of mags, read the reviews here on SR. You'll get the info you need. For the parents, listen to your kids, get the games they want rather the ones that you've seen the name of on the telly. A real gamer has no bad games in his collection.
