We've seen Virtua Fighter 4, Deus Ex, Medal Of Honour, soon GT Concept, Spiderman, No One Lives Forever, Final Fantasy X.....
All have promised to be the next 'big thing' and all, in my opinion, have failed to deliver in terms of gameplay, replay value and general gaming satisfaction. For instance, Final Fantasy X is nothing more than a barely interactive movie...after the first few hours you realise you're interaction is solely presing the confirm button for most of the time to play battles or advance dialogue. Medal Of Honour was great, until it's finsihed after 10 hours play...Deus Ex...OPS2 Magaizine needs to seriously think why this got 9 oout of 10 because it should have got 1 for beein rubbish - bad graphics, bad gameplay, cliched story - rubbish. Virtua Fighter 4 wanted to be Dead Or Alive 3 so badly it forgot about being playable. For those unwilling to devote a half a lifetime to mastering all the moves this proved an overhyped title. GT Concept...shameless cash in ?
Last Xmas was the golden time for Sony. No competition, good games out, good games coming later. This year the situation is different, overhyped games that fail to deliver value for money are going to be a disaster. If you have Vitua Fighter, go find out its's trade in value...£15 at Another World because so many have been traded in. Sony are becoming complacent, relying on hype and graphics to win the sales war. It's worked so far, but for how much longer.
Can anyone seriously say they haven't bought a big new release at some point this year and not been 100% happy with it ? Even Metal Gear Solid 2 wasn't eveyting it cuold have been, Substance is a tribute to that, and the fact that Substance is multiformat speaks volumes.
Planned online expansion risks further let downs, as the price becomes clear to gamers and a divide is opened between those who play online and those who don't. Hard Drives, Keyboards and LCD monitors are all great, but I'd like something to play ? Y'know, games with the playability of original Playstation titles; FF7, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Tomb Raider, all these and more had me sittiing playing night after night advancing further and further. With the PSONE Soy did deservedly well, but they are now becoming akin to Microsoft, maybe worse. Being the industry leader is okay, trying to claim the industry for yourself isn't. Sony are good at hardware, but software has been a hit and miss affair for them, PS2 has relied on third party exclusive titles that were only possible on PS2 as it was the only next gen machine out there.
Well this year that changed. This xmas the sales war begins, and Nintendo and Microsoft have some big guns aimed straight at Sony's heart. Whilst sony looses exclusive next gen licenses like Tony Hawks and Metal Gear, even FFXI, the other guys have their own killer exclusives lined up, Nintendo have a host of titles that early playtests suggest deliver grpahics, playability and value....Starfox, Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Metroid, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0...and on and on. Sure Sony have some great ones too, but how many will be graphical triumpths but gameplay bores ?
Whilst the Sony community gloats over sales figures which it sees as akin to Divine Protection, it's not looking too closely at itself or Sony.
I'm not saying Sony are bad, or rubbish, (I'vegot a console myself and 20 games for the thing) just that they've forgotten how they got to where they are now, and that gamers will only tolerate so many let downs before they seek other attractions....which is why a purple cube shaped object now sits next to the television.....
Games are about playability and originality, not cut scenes, intereactive movies and driving games featuring more cars than most people could care about !

Maybe not slow for hardware, but it is for software. Yes, PS2 has had a few big titles, but nowhere near what it will have at the end of the year.
Gamecube launched with a few good titles, and Nintendo have at least attempted to release one good title every couple of weeks.
Microsoft have done nothing of the sort. They launched with three or four good titles, and a pile of distnctly average titles. There has also not been one must-have title launched for Xbox between launch and the present time.

Sony are concentrating on the network adapter because it's something they promised, and with which they want to deliver. You speak as if SCE is one singular department who can concentrate on just one thing at a time, when I think you'll find that there are several departments and the Sony as a company are not simply concentrating on one piece of hardware.
To suggest that the network adapter is "doomed" is daft. It may not be the biggest selling add-on Sony ever produce, but there's enough interest - I believe - in both the press and elsewhere (here, for example) to suggest that there will be a considerable niche market for the online capabilites.
Then again, it could surprise us all and be a major success. In the UK, though, I think its appeal will be limited due to the relatively small number of people with broadband.

No, I'm sure you're not the only one - in fact, I know you're not. But then there are many more who have been quite satisfied. Personally, I've been playing far more on my PC over the last few weeks than any of my consoles, but that doesn't mean I'm disappointed by them. (Well, apart from my Xbox - but the reasons for that are well documented here!)
> You're assuimng Sony are going to sell a pile this
> Xmas, based on what ?
Based on the great games they have lined up. There's no reason to assume that they will do any worse out of this Christmas than anyone else. The sheer number of PS2 consoles sold over recent months (that's after the launch of the other machines and last years massive titles) does more than suggest that Sony will have a successful Christmas this year.
That's not to say they will do better than anyone else, but this isn't necessarily about being first, second or third - it's about a successful Christmas, which Sony will have. I'd still put money on PS2 having at least 4 of the top 10 games this Christmas, and probably the Number 1 position too.

We'll have to disagree on those, I'm afraid.
> Superb, hell even Luigi's Mansion is great while it lasts !
Hang on... you were saying earlier that Medal of Honour was "great until it finished after 10 hours of play", which is a fairly negative comment. Yet LM lasts the same amount of time, and yet you're sounding positive about it.
This is the game that Nintendo - those who supposedly really concentrate on making good games - refuse to let people rent, because they won't make any money off of sales.
And Sony are concentrating on the wrong things?
> but look at Burnout on Gamecube...it's way better.
First of all, it has a few more reflections, it's not "way better" at all. Secondly, since when did graphics take precedence over gameplay, which is identical and just as fast on either machine? That said, I traded mine as it wasn't the most entertaining title.
> Add on's and hyped games are good, but where's the gameplay gone ? I
> suspect it's watching a FMV instead....
Well, make your mind up - is it graphics or gameplay?
Wookie, even though you've gone through my whole topic and countered it, you haven't addressed the fact that Sony are concentrating on hardware, such as the doomed network adapter, and seeming to care very little about the sheer playability of their biggest releases. FF7 was no way as bad as FFX is, and the original MGS had more gameplay, plus it was harder. Sure FFX and MGS2 are prettier but.... The fact is, from evidence on these forums alone when the games I mention have been released, I'm not hte only one whose been disappointed by this year's big offerings. You're assuimng Sony are going to sell a pile this Xmas, based on what ? GTA Vice City - GTA3 probably encouraged most people who were interested enough in this kind of game to buy a console already, Angel Of Darkness - maybe, as long as the developers don't repeat the Chronicles disaster.... The Getaway - possibly, but it's still very much GTA3 from a different view. With a price drop then this could all change, but Sony need to get a move on and do titles that deliver on their promises, like Microsoft and Nintendo are doing right now.
Microsoft promised that Halo was great, and it is. Project Gotham was hyped nowhere near the extent of GT3, and its great. DOA3 ? Great.
Nintendo; possibly best launch games, ever. Rogue Leader ? Makes you doner why Lucas bother with the starfighter games which are rubbish in comparison, Waverace ? Superb, hell even Luigi's Mansion is great while it lasts ! They've followed up straight away with Super Smash Bros, Pikmin, Monkey Ball...and more are on the way in the form of Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness...
Sure both of these are getting multiformat versions of PS2 former exclusives, but look at Burnout on Gamecube...it's way better. Thrid parties like Square and Konami have made PS2 exclusives which have been semi let downs, I said nothing about multifomrat developers making bad games .Tony Hawks is great on all systems, as is Spiderman, Crazy Taxi e.t.c.
Add on's and hyped games are good, but where's the gameplay gone ? I suspect it's watching a FMV instead....
~~Belldandy~~
Well thats what I think. It was a good point though but I still think that if your looking for perfect games then your gonna be dissapointed for a long time. And that regards every console.
> Well, after the last few months of Playstation 2 games only one word

Spring/Summer is traditionally a slow time for big game releases. This year is no different.
> For instance, Final Fantasy X is nothing more than a barely interactive

Most Final Fantasy games have been just that, though. I bought FF7 and didn't even get off the first disc before I was bored. Some people like tht sort of thing, though I can't really figure out why! :-)
> Medal Of Honour was great, until it's finsihed after 10 hours
To be fair, that's not really a lot different to the PC's Allied Assault. In fact, most FPS games don't run for that long if you're any good at them. A friend of mine finished Max Payne in about 8 hours, spread over 2 days.
> play...Deus Ex...OPS2 Magaizine needs to seriously think why this got 9

I didn't appeal to me, because I played the PC version 2 years ago. The graphics are decidedly average, but the story is the same as the PC version... do you consider that 'crap' too? Everone in the PC world thought it was fantastic.
> Virtua Fighter 4 wanted to be Dead Or Alive 3 so badly it forgot about

Surely not a bad game from Sega, the company who only make good games? Good grief, what is the world coming to?
> GT Concept...shameless cash in?
Absolutely not. GT Concept was initially produced as an arcade-mode-only version, for use at the Tokyo Motor Show, and was never intended for public consumption outside of Japan. The reason it is now being made available outside of Japan is because the army of GT3 fans requested - nay, demanded - that they be able to buy it.
> Can anyone seriously say they haven't bought a big new release at some
> point this year and not been 100% happy with it ?
There is one game I've bought this year which I've been intensely let down by, and its name is Halo. But assuming that you mean PS2 games, then no, I can't say I've been let down by any of them. Some were far better than expected, some were different to what I expected - but none were disappoining.
> Even Metal Gear Solid 2 wasn't eveyting it cuold have been, Substance
> is a tribute to that
No game is ever as much as it could have been. That's why we get sequels and add-on packs (for PC).
> and the fact that Substance is multiformat speaks volumes.
Many games are going multi-format unless exclusivity deals are signed. A multi-format MGS is not Sony's loss, it's everyone else's gain. Just the same as other previous exclusives on other platforms now coming to PS2. Multi-format seems to be the new trend.
> Planned online expansion risks further let downs, as the price becomes

This isn't purely a Sony issue, though. Microsoft will have most of the same issues, as will Nintendo when Gamecube gets its online capability.
> Y'know, games with the playability of original Playstation titles; FF7,
> Ridge Racer, Tekken, Tomb Raider, all these and more had me sittiing

And the PS2 incarnations don't do it for you? Personally, Angel of Darkness is one of my most anticipated games this year.
> Sure Sony have some great ones too, but how many will be graphical
> triumpths but gameplay bores ?
From what I've seen, not many. But the same can be said of the other formats. Wreckless, for example, is a classic example of pretty graphics taking precedence over gameplay.
PS2 has plenty of games due which, while not always the prettiest, are reported to ooze gameplay by those fortunate enough to have played early versions.
> Whilst the Sony community gloats over sales figures which it sees as
> akin to Divine Protection, it's not looking too closely at itself or
> Sony.
I'm sure no-one sees it quite like that. What is impressive about the sales figures is that, despite the claims of everyone anti-Sony, people STILL seem to prefer to pick up a PS2 above anything else - including during this "dry period" we're having.
Damn right that the saled of the other formats should pick up around Christmas - but then, so will PS2's. Unless, of course, everyone in the world (and his dog) already has one by then - which seems to be the way it's going! :-)
In fact, for most of the games you mention as being 'poor', you're overlooking one important factor: most of the titles are made by third-party developers, not Sony. And many of these developers are going multi-format. Put simply, this means that these developers will be bringing ports of the same "crap" games to an Xbox and Gamecube near you.
> which is why a purple cube shaped object now sits next to the
> television...
Same here. Though in my case it has more to do with Monkey Target than any dissatisfaction with Sony or my PS2.
